Let's be real, zombie movie fans, Army of the Dead seemed like a big deal for a while, but what happened? What was a cool, action-packed heist story turned into the ultimate "wait, what happened?" situation. After The Suicide Squad was such a hit, everyone thought Snyder’s vision was something special and his plans for an epic zombie franchise were the next step. The zombie heist concept was a wild mix of high-stakes action and terrifying thrills - people seemed to love it. The whole Army of the Dead thing, that seemed to be so promising, was sadly scrapped by Netflix, despite the popularity of The Army of the Dead spinoff, Army Of Thieves.
Zack Snyder is known for big productions – his superhero Movies and his zombie flicks - always get those adrenaline pumping and hearts racing. So, what happened with Netflix? Well, that's kind of a mystery, but we do have some info on the project's fall! We got the full explanation straight from Zack Snyder. No official announcements were made, so it's clear Netflix wanted to go out quietly.
Remember when Zack Snyder first started talking about all the plans for the future of Army of the Dead? We had Army of Thieves already out there, but he was also working on an animated series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, a prequel with some seriously interesting backstory to dive into. It was set to premiere back in spring of 2022, so it’s kind of weird it never happened. There were also plans for more Army of the Dead Movies. Snyder was planning to take the whole thing in some pretty crazy, wild directions. And then bam – Netflix called time out!
What really made things interesting was that the Zombie Apocalypse in Army of the Dead was also planned to link up to another Franchise, Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon. One character in Lost Vegas would've even been a pretty important figure in the anime! Think a galaxy-wide crossover! And how about a storyline with a cool twist – the origin of the zombie outbreak actually came from the planet that the Rebel Moon character was from! This means that while the Army of the Dead series is officially shelved, there's still a tiny chance that we'll see those storylines play out in some way in Rebel Moon. We've got our fingers crossed!
We all love a bit of a mystery, and why exactly Army of the Dead got the axe is kind of an open secret right now! Nobody from Netflix or Zack Snyder's camp is giving a real explanation, but some experts think it could've been because Rebel Moon became such a big deal to Zack Snyder! And when you’re passionate about something, it makes sense that you're gonna focus on making it awesome. He’s also doing so many films, maybe he just didn't have the energy or resources for a whole other franchise too!
Also, Rebel Moon wasn't really killing it in reviews, so maybe Netflix was thinking they'd put more money and time into a brand-new, already popular, franchise instead. It is hard to imagine how Army of the Dead could compete, since the first film had been out there for almost four years at this point! And you know what? There is a good chance that the Army of the Dead franchise was on the way out anyway, especially if you're considering how those Army of Thieves reviews went. Some people felt it was a great, stand-alone story, but there weren’t enough people clamoring to see what was next.
Army of the Dead might've had an unfortunate end, but you have to admire Zack Snyder for his daring ideas! Army of the Dead didn’t just stand still and it managed to bring in millions of streams on Netflix, and it’s kind of impressive to think he was thinking about these grand plans with a bunch of projects already on his plate. Of course, nobody’s saying that Army of the Dead will never be back – after all, there is still that tiny bit of zombie-flavored goodness that's waiting to be brought into the world of Rebel Moon.
Let’s just keep an eye out for Zack Snyder's future movies. We might see the Army of the Dead saga resurface somewhere down the line! Or maybe Zack will find new and amazing zombie universes to bring to life.
