RIP, Army of the Dead 2: The Sequel That Never Was
Remember Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead? It was all zombie mayhem, Las Vegas action, and an awesome heist movie in one. We had high hopes for a sequel, a bigger, badder zombie movie in Army Of The Dead 2. But just like those Las Vegas zombies, this whole sequel plan ended up a bit...dead. Netflix, those nice folks who brought us the first movie, have just recently pulled the plug on Army of the Dead 2 and even the planned spinoffs, and now there’s a whole lot of "what could’ve been" sadness happening.
I guess the real kicker here is Netflix wanted Army of the Dead to be their big "it's like Game of Thrones but with zombies" hit, but just as things were starting to heat up for Snyder and his crew, he changed course and went off on this super ambitious "Rebel Moon" thing - his own galaxy-spanning space adventure (kind of like if Star Wars got crossed with a Mad Max film!). Netflix is pretty generous with the checkbooks, but apparently, even they couldn't fund all those amazing sci-fi ideas without getting a bit overwhelmed!
"Planet of the Dead" Never Had a Chance: A Cancelled Story
We've been waiting and wondering about the sequel to Army of the Dead for years now. We knew that it wasn't just sitting there in the Netflix planning vault, because Snyder was all about making his big dreams happen! He’d even mentioned the sequel title "Planet of the Dead", but no spoilers, because now it looks like that movie will never come out. This concept seemed kind of insane – I mean, like a whole universe of zombies. I was pretty pumped up for it. Now? I’m heartbroken.
Snyder was definitely taking those big, crazy ideas and running with them, so, maybe you couldn't blame him for taking the time and focusing on his space saga project. But hey, that doesn't mean the fans weren’t hoping we'd get a super wild zombie sequel in Army Of The Dead 2. What else are zombie fans supposed to watch during the summer heat when those outdoor pools start opening and you need an extra dose of apocalyptic thrills?
An Animated "Army of the Dead" That Never Came to Be
Not just the Army of the Dead movie sequel, but the animated spin-off series that was also in the works. We even heard that the series would’ve connected to that whole "Rebel Moon" universe, which had everyone freaking out! Apparently, the voice-acting was all done - even Christian Slater got to voice a character. This made the Netflix cancellation sting a little more. It really felt like this universe was ready to grow, and now we’re not sure what’s going to happen!
And there's this whole crossover thing! Imagine a world where those zombies met up with the characters in Rebel Moon, and who knows? Maybe those zombies and spaceships ended up going head to head!
The Army of the Dead Future
Let’s face it: If you are a fan of Zack Snyder’s films, and the way he brings these epic stories to life with super intense visuals (remember "300"?), it really hurts that this movie isn’t going to be happening, and there won’t be any spin-offs or animated series that fans can watch.
Now it looks like we have to wait and see what the future holds for Zack’s next big projects, including that massive sci-fi movie "Rebel Moon". This whole "Army of the Dead" saga felt so huge - I had to watch "Planet of the Apes" right after the first movie, hoping that Snyder was going to make this insane world even bigger and wilder!
The Death of the Franchise
This wasn’t just one movie. We had Army of the Dead, a prequel with a totally cool cast – Army of Thieves (if you missed that, go check it out) – and so many cool, insane ideas floating around. Now, the only hope is that Netflix changes their minds and lets Snyder unleash his zombie madness, but something tells me it's over! This news kinda breaks the hearts of many, especially with how those "zombie" ideas were so perfectly aligned with Snyder's filmography, his use of visual effects, and a ton of thrilling, heart-stopping action.
Let's keep our fingers crossed and see if the "Army of the Dead" crew pulls off some kind of last-minute zombie magic, or if the "Rebel Moon" universe becomes even more successful than this one! No matter what though, those "Army of the Dead" Movies were a cool chapter in movie history. We can still revisit the film as a one-off event - it is pretty awesome and exciting.
