Why Actors Refuse Movie Sequels: Money, Story & More
Why Do Some Actors Refuse Movie Sequels?
You’d think actors would always love to return for a movie sequel, especially with all the money! But sometimes it's not that simple, there's a ton of stuff going on, that even famous stars want no part of! They sometimes feel story changes aren't good or don't like how much pay they're being offered, or it just might be that they're tired of the whole movie series!
Did Actors Refuse Roles Because They Hated the Story?
- Keanu Reeves refused to return for Speed 2 - it's just, yeah, that was a pretty bad movie sequel! So maybe he dodged a bullet! Reeves really felt like that script wasn't a good direction. He made the right call - and it's kind of crazy because he later made The Matrix and got even more famous!
- That classic Christmas film, Elf! You can't make a movie sequel to it! Turns out Will Ferrell felt like the story was awful! That’s why he walked away. Even with a whopping $29 million! It sounds like he knew that movie series would really ruin the first film.
Is It Always About The Pay?
- It's all about those big bucks, right? Pay disputes have definitely caused problems. You gotta feel for Robert Duvall - he was in both The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II. They said he didn't come back because he was disappointed that Al Pacino was paid way more than him. In The Godfather: Part III, they tried to explain he died. What an escape act!
- Another big name: Will Smith! You won't see him in Independence Day: Resurgence because he felt the money wasn't right! He was in the original movie, Independence Day! Vivica A. Fox thinks that's why the second movie was a dud. It sounds like, no matter how big a star you are, even a massive paycheck won’t make it a hit if they aren't happy.
What's The Problem with Reprising Roles?
- It seems like lots of famous actors didn't want to keep playing the same roles in movie sequels.
- For Linda Hamilton, playing Sarah Connor in Terminator, it came down to wanting a new direction! She also wasn't sure about having a different director than James Cameron! Maybe she knew it would go off the rails!
- There are tons of different reasons that can come up: maybe a movie franchise has already been played out or they simply don't see any room for their character. If an actor thinks there isn't much potential there, they'll walk!
Why Would Someone Refuse to Reprise a Role?
- It sounds crazy! They’re famous - they get huge money! Maybe, they are not really thinking about the paycheck but really the legacy of those movie sequels! They know they might mess things up if they aren't comfortable!
- It can really happen when actors want to try something new! The famous Batman, Christian Bale - decided to give up the role in The Dark Knight - after his big debut in Batman Begins! Maybe, it was tough getting back in the role of that superhero,
- But hey, we can't really blame them, it's not just a career thing, it's also how it can be really exhausting, too! Imagine, for those famous stars, the makeup! It takes hours and can really make things difficult. So you gotta give it up to them for standing up for themselves, but maybe we are missing out on some seriously awesome movie franchises.
A lot of stars do come back for the next movie sequels - it's exciting to see them on the big screen, even after all these years! And in the end, we want actors to love the projects, so they do a great job. And hopefully, the actors have fun doing those sequel recasts and still make a great movie for everyone!
