The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is out to destroy the Flash with a new Mech.
The Flash #9 by Simon Spurrier, Ramon Perez, Vasco Georgiev, Matt Herms, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou takes things from bad to worse. Speedsters are being held responsible for the current cosmic events that are tearing apart the DC Universe. While the Flash Family flees Amanda Waller's soldiers, Barry Allen is grappling with the Crown of Thawnes being implanted inside his skull. Millions of distinct Reverse-Flash identities shout at Flash, attempting to persuade him to commit horrible atrocities against the people he loves.
The Flash sees Iris West in a park with Linda Park-West and her baby Wade. The Flash urges them to go to safety, but Iris refuses to leave Barry's side, knowing that he can handle whatever is going on with him. Barry fights back, and the Crown of Thawnes' power begins to wane just as Harley Rathaway and Inspector Pilgrim arrive on the scene to take baby Wade somewhere safe. Flash finally gets rid of the Crown of Thawnes, thanks to Iris's support. Free of Reverse-Flash's influence, Barry speaks with Inspector Pilgrim and informs him that speedsters are not to guilty for the recent cosmic calamities. During their conversation, Flash intercepts a missile, prompting a warning to stay away from civilians. Barry Allen heads out to get as far away from people as possible. Flash makes it to the shore, where he encounters a gigantic bat-themed mech. Flash assumes the mech is one of Batman's before the suit of armor launches an attack.
Why is Batman attacking the Flash with a mech?
Despite what Barry believes, this is not Batman, or at least not the one he knows. Unbeknownst to the Scarlet Speedster, Batman's backup personality has taken on a life of its own. While intended as a backup to assist Bruce in dealing with acute trauma, Zur-en-arrh was motivated to take over as the main personality in Batman's head following his encounter with Failsafe, another of the Dark Knight's contingency plans. Zur-En-Arrh encouraged Batman to isolate himself, which he eventually accomplished following the "Gotham War".
In a dramatic encounter with the Joker, Zur-en-arrh attempted to take over Batman's body, but Bruce fought back and prevented his physical form from being seized. However, Zur-En-Arrh transferred his consciousness to Failsafe's body, allowing Batman to retire while Zur-En-Arrh remained the DCU's sole Batman. Bruce, of course, refused, prompting Zur-En-Arrh to confine him at Blackgate Penitentiary. With the real Batman out of the picture, Zur-En-Arrh launched his quest to eradicate all types of crime and began arresting Gotham's criminals in large numbers. However, Zur-En-Arrh is not the only one who wants to bring about peace by any means necessary. Amanda Waller, the recently appointed chief of the Bureau of Sovereignty, is on a mission to rid the world of metahumans. Waller has been preparing for war by acquiring formidable assets and conquering Gamorra, an island kingdom. But, after noticing what Zur-En-Arrh was up to, she tried to entice him to join her side by declaring they both wanted the same thing, a statement that struck a chord with the new Batman.
Zur-En-Arrh Prepares for His Bigger Attack in Absolute Power.
It is strange that Zur-En-Arrh is now assaulting Flash. It is already known that he will be leading a team of Amazo robots in Dc Comics' upcoming summer event, Absolute Power. According to solicitations, Zur-En-Arrh will have one created expressly to knock down Flash using the combined speeds of other speedsters. It's also interesting that Zur-En-Arrh is acting on behalf of the Bureau of Sovereignty while the twisted Dark Knight has only just begun to evaluate Amanda Waller's offer in Batman.
While The Flash #9 is playing fast and loose with the timeline, it makes logical that Zur-En-Arrh is pursuing the Flash. Batman's alter ego, along with thousands of others, currently believes that speedsters are destroying the fabric of reality with their abilities. Zur-En-Arrh is unaware that several of Flash's Rogues are to blame for the metaphysical disasters, which are part of an attack organized by an unidentified cosmic danger. But if Zur-En-Arrh believes Flash poses a threat, he will undoubtedly deal with it. Fortunately, fans are well aware that this struggle will not unfold as Zur-En-Arrh would like. Flash may be one of the most prepared Batmen around, but he will still be rushing about during Absolute Power at full speed. This mecha is unlikely to provide Zur-En-Arrh the triumph he seeks, but the next clash could provide useful information for the robotic Batman's future plans.
Zur-En-Arrh's Mecha will help him create the Ultimate Flash Destroyer.
Zur-En-Arrh possesses all of the genuine Batman's best qualities, especially his strategic thinking. While Zur-En-Arrh's new mecha is unlikely to defeat the Flash, it will provide an excellent opportunity to study him in battle. Zur-En-Arrh can simply apply what he learns here to Velocity. Unfortunately for Barry, Batman seldom makes the same mistake again, so while this mecha may not be the most difficult challenge the Scarlet Speedster has ever encountered, it will enable Zur-En-Arrh create an even worse weapon to finally defeat the Flash.
