The Boys' Sexuality: Frenchie's Revealed Way Before Season 4
Though the character's queerness was revealed well before the fourth Amazon Prime Video release, many viewers of The Boys Season 4 have expressed disbelief at the "reveal" that Frenchie (Tomer Capone) is bisexual. Among Billy Butcher's titular anti-Vought vigilantes, Serge—better known as Frenchie—is a major player. Haunted by his previous sins, Frenchie is a jack-of- all-trades with a background as a hired gun; his great heart is on show in his relationship with Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). Frenchie and Kimiko parted by the end of the third Boys season.
Frenchie has gone on to another love prospect while Kimiko is chasing a platonic coworker dynamic in the fourth season: Colin Hauser (Elliot Knight). Frenchie and Colin solidify their sexual relationship over the first few episodes of The Boys Season 4, but Frenchie seems reluctant to start a full-fledged romantic track. Years earlier, Frenchie was hired to murder Colin's family; this is information the latter is unaware of. Colin is one of Frenchie's most significant same-sex relationships, however the program makes several references to her Bisexuality before the fourth season's storyline.
The Boys Season 2 Strongly Suggested Frenchie Was Bisexual
The Boys hinted to Frenchie's Bisexuality as early as its sophomore trip, hence viewers shouldn't be really surprised that the character is pursuing a relationship with Colin — after dating Kimiko. The show particularly suggested that Frenchie had a love relationship with Jay (Michael Ayres). The Boys explores Frenchie's past and story in season 2, emphasizing the time he spent as hired gun and criminal alongside Jay and weapons supplier Cherie (Jordana Lajoie). Especially considering the tense situation, Jay's death seems to severely affect Frenchie.
Frenchie is assigned to track The Lamplighter for Butcher's team when she gets a frantic call from Cherie explaining Jay is dying from an overdose. Frenchie speeds to Jay's side instead of finishing the current task. Later on he says Jay died following yet another overdose. It's strongly hinted that Frenchie was romantically linked with Jay and Cherie during the show's flashback of her former criminal activity. The Boys never say straight out that the trio had a polyamorous relationship, but the subtext is very much there for viewers to pick up.
In other episodes too, the boys have hinted at Frenchie's bisexuality.
Frenchie remarks other times implying his Bisexuality. Though he doesn't feel the need to "come out," Frenchie's queerness permeates the character's actions, emotions, and words. Apart from his relationship with Jay, who he affectionately calls "my Dorothy," Frenchie insists on having a more gender-inclusive lineup of strippers at a bachelor party for Mother's Milk's (Laz Alonso). Frenchie later on even advises Mother's Milk to be more "open-minded" about Love Sausage. The signals were present long before season 4; proof of Frenchie's bisexuality did not come out of nowhere.
Referring to Judy Garland, an LGBTQ+ ally and actor from Wizard of Oz, the phrase "a friend of Dorothy" is a subtle approach of implying someone's sexual orientation.
Why The Boys Season 4's Romance Story Works for Frenchie & Colin
The way Frenchie's connection with Colin is refreshing—the show doesn't focus on their queerness. Rather, it handles the relationship as any other, all the while adding a layer of complexity about their common past. Bisexual characters shouldn't have to "prove" their identities by having on-screen relationships with multiple-gender partners. Nonetheless, The Boys' explicit focus on Elliot Knight's Colin and his relationship with Frenchie marks the first time some viewers have considered Frenchie's queerness. Furthermore, The Boys' more straight-forward story is striking for viewers who identify with Frenchie.
Thursdays through July 18, 2024 show fresh The Boy season 4 episodes. Amazon Prime Video's The Boys has always received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, but The Boys season 4 is a somewhat different story.
