New Justice League Dark Team for Wonder Woman: Examining the Underrated Team
The forthcoming Absolute Power tie-in issue for Wonder Woman brings the most underappreciated Justice League team back together for what looks to be one of their toughest conflicts yet. Wonder Woman's new squad arrives just in time for the DC blockbuster event, Absolute Power, but without their powers, how will they fare?
Justice League Dark: An Underrated Heroes Team
Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, and Tomeu Morey's Wonder Woman #11, scheduled for publication on July 17, 2024, will first appear as the first tie-in issue for DC's blockbuster summer event, Absolute Power. This crisis event sets DC's best heroes against Amanda Waller in a fight deciding the fate of meta humans.
Opening Issue #11, Wonder Woman bunkers down with John Constantine, Detective Chimp, Madame Xanadu, Jim "the Spectre," Mary Marvel, Shazam, following Waller's smear campaign against heroes using deep fake AI-generated videos. This special hero lineup signals the likely birth of a fresh Justice League Dark.
Define the Justice League Dark.
Wonder Woman's fans may recall her leadership in the 2018 Justice League Dark series, in which she teamed up with Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Man-Bat, and Detective Chimp to fight against the supernatural and magical threats the regular Justice League often struggles to address. About six years forward, Wonder Woman #11 seems ready to rekindle Diana's connections to the Justice League Dark.
Of the six heroes Wonder Woman gathers, four—John Constantine, Detective Chimp, Madame Xanadu, and Jim "the Spectre" Corrigan—have strong ties to the occult and past memberships in JLD teams. Although Mary Marvel and Shazam have no past connection to the JLD, their magical powers naturally improve this outstanding lineup. Their presence also brings a special dynamic since, except from Wonder Woman, Mary and Billy are still young people with limited experience collaborating with the other heroes.
Should King choose to formally name this team as such, with seven members it would become one of the biggest and most varied iterations of the Justice League Dark. Given the hinted events, though, there is an equal chance this team might break up as fast as it develops.
An Amazing Meeting with an Amazo
One of Amanda Waller's power-stealing Amazo robots attacks the heroes, abruptly ending the Wonder Woman #11 preview and formally launching Absolute Power into King's plot. Fans know from Absolute Power #1 that John Constantine loses his magical ability. Task Force VII #1 also emphasized Billy and Mary's escape from the Amazo, where they revealed they lost most of their powers and thus owe Wonder Woman their survival.
King's Wonder Woman #11 will thus show the crucial Amazo encounter leading in John, Diana, Billy, and Mary losing their powers. Fans already know, thanks to the earlier published Absolute Power issues, the meeting with the Amazo in Wonder Woman #11 will cause the heroes to lose their powers.
What transpires when the team loses its powers?
Still to be seen, though, is Wonder Woman's and her colleagues' response upon losing power. Potential events could be a strategic retreat to regroup, Waller's capture, or ongoing confrontation of the robot in spite of constraints. Still, it's clear that this fledgling Justice League Dark team is already splitting since Wonder Woman's sacrifice let Billy and Mary flee and left the fate of the other heroes unknown for now.
Wonder Woman: The Underrated Hero
Diana, Princess of the Amazons's superhero alterative is Wonder Woman. Designed on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with great physical strength who uses magical abilities—like her well-known Lasso of Truth—to subdue her enemies. Though as strong as her fellow heroes, Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unparalleled in her virtue and compassion.
