Story of Red Hulk 2099: Origin
Alchemex employee Ross Romero is assigned to research a renegade planet close to the sun in Annihilation 2099 #3. Romero and his group find the planet to be Ego, the Living Planet, on death's brink upon arriving. Offering Romero a portion of his flesh as a last act of survival, Ego, badly wounded after an attack by Terrax the Planet Hunter gives Eating the "fruit," Romero changes into Red Hulk 2099 gaining Ego's memories in addition to Hulk-level power.
Red Hulk 2099: Elder of the Universe Knowledge
Ego dies while his memories live in Red Hulk 2099 and provide him Elder of the Universe knowledge.
