The "Chosen One" prophecy, made famous by Anakin Skywalker, is central to the Skywalker Saga. But there's another, less-known prophecy that perfectly encapsulates the Skywalker saga's themes.
In Master & Apprentice, a novel by Claudia Gray, we learn about a prophecy that says, "The danger of the past is not past, but sleeps in an egg. When the egg cracks, it will threaten the galaxy entire."
This prophecy could have warned the Jedi about the dangers of the Sith. But the Jedi were arrogant. They thought the Sith were extinct and didn't believe the prophecy.
And they paid the price. The Sith returned, and the galaxy was plunged into darkness.
The Skywalker Saga is full of examples of how evil keeps coming back. The Sith were defeated, but they returned. The Empire fell, but the First Order rose. And Palpatine? Well, he returned as a clone in The Rise of Skywalker.
Luke Skywalker said it best: "No one is ever really gone." It's true for the people we love, but it's also true for the villains.
We see this theme in other Star Wars stories as well. The Nightsisters, a group of powerful witches, were thought to be eradicated after the Clone Wars. But they're coming back, thanks to Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka series.
And in The High Republic, the Jedi had to deal with the Nameless, creatures that eat the Force. The Jedi thought they had defeated them, but they came back. The Jedi's arrogance led to their downfall, yet again.
The prophecy's message is clear: We can't forget the past, because it will always come back to haunt us. It's a warning to stay vigilant.
The Jedi, the New Republic, and even Rey, the new Jedi, have all struggled to learn this lesson.
The New Republic, in particular, made the mistake of disarming itself. They believed that peace had finally come. This was shortsighted, because the First Order was quietly gathering power, waiting for the opportunity to strike. The New Republic was unprepared and nearly destroyed. It took a lot of sacrifice to defeat the First Order.
The cycle of darkness, defeat, and rebirth continues. The Skywalker saga is a story about the fight for freedom, for justice, and for the light. It's a story about the importance of staying vigilant. It's a story about not taking democracy and peace for granted.
The prophecy reminds us that the fight for a better galaxy is never over. And hopefully, we've learned the lesson that evil never truly goes away. The darkness is always lurking, waiting for its chance to return.
