The Relationship of Wolverine to the Phoenix Gets a Complete Different Interpretive Meaning
Although Jean's choice of Wolverine's claws makes sense as an homage to a friend who has long functioned as a guardian of mutantkind, it could also have significant lore ramifications for Logan's link to the Phoenix Force. Fans of Jason Aaron, Michael Del Mundo, Christian Ward et al's Thor volume 5 saw a possible future when Wolverine is the last mortal host of the Phoenix, living in an almost empty universe with Thor, who at that point has become the aged king of Asgard. Since then, this "Old Man Phoenix" character has shown on and off. His presence has impacted how fans view Logan's relationship to the cosmic firebird, so rendering him a lot more significant part in its age-spanning narrative.
Fans had believed that this relationship to the Phoenix Force was the actual reason of Wolverine's brief 'hot Claws' development, which first surfaced in 2018's Return of Wolverine #2. With the wicked Persephone essentially overclocking his healing factor after death and resurrection, the surplus energy superheated his claws. Fans instantly reverted to the old power and forgot about the new one. Fans have since suggested, meanwhile, that this unusual ability would link the present-day Wolverine to his future 'Old Man Phoenix' form, particularly given the Phoenix Force is not constrained by time.
Combining Form of the X-Men Has Own Wolverine Claws
Originally the human Nathaniel Essex, Enigma rose to godhood by uniting the knowledge of four clones who each thought they were Essex's one real heir—a group included long-time X-Men foe Mister Sinister. Enigma, now a godlike being known as a Dominion, was freed from the boundaries of time and reality and could go up and down the past altering history to eradicate the X-Men from existence.
With Jean Grey having lately embraced her link to the cosmic energy of creation, the X-Men were able to restore the Phoenix before Enigma could flourish into its full potential. Connecting the Phoenix to Jean Grey in their closest relationship ever as well as to all mutants who will ever exist (even in other timelines and other dimensions of existence), it turns out that its rebirth during the Krakoan Era marks its true moment of cosmological creating. Though the Phoenix claims that "our talons are the focused totality of mutantkind," it is obviously Jean who decides to honor one of the real loves of her life by manifesting the power of mutantkind as Wolverine's Claws.
Though he's had several upgrades, Wolverine's adamantium is good.
Although Jean Grey pops them, the Phoenix Force Claws are probably still active as the definitive, most potent form of Wolverine's claws in Marvel mythology. The might of "every mutant who has ever lived" renders even the strongest metal adamantium second-rate. Still, these fresh 'Phoenix Claws' are not the first Marvel has enhanced Wolverine's adamantium. Only lately, Wolverine acquired Ghost Rider's abilities and manifested Hellfire claws as the "Hellverine." Also during the Krakoan Era, a future version of Wolverine infected with the techno-organic Transmode Virus returned in time showing the ability to hack any kind of technology with a touch of his claws. During his time with the Midnight Sons, Logan also gained power from mystical armor, giving his claws eldritch ability that expanded the swipes' range.
While Logan's stay on the New Avengers saw him enhanced with the powers of Iron Fist and Doctor Strange, allowing him to take on the ancient sorcerer Agamotto, fans have also seen Wolverine upgraded to godlike levels - in Fear Itself, Odin enchanted Warrior's claws, which were enhanced by dwarven smiths. While Governor-General James Howlett of Earth-12025 has adamantine claws which can absorb energy, including Cyclops' optic blasts, several alternate-reality variants of Wolverine also received their own claw upgrades - his merged form with Emma Frost had diamond claws that gave him telepathic access to anyone they touched. In the Ultimate Universe, meanwhile, Jimmy Hudson, the son of Wolverine, evolved the mutant ability to create metal, covering his own bones and claws without reference to Weapon X's tests.
Marvel releases the Ultimate Form of Wolverine's Claws, rendering adamantium look palable.
mutants unleash the ultimate, god-tier manifestation of Wolverine's claws to win the last battle for existence as X-Men's 2019–2024 Krakoan Era ends. The X-Men have been training for their decisive fight against artificial intelligence for years since the future sentinel Nimrod has plotted the extermination of all mutantkind. When this conflict eventually arrived, though, Nimrod proved to be not the ultimate threat; rather, the X-Men confronted the godlike AI known as Enigma, able to arbitrarily change time and reality.
At Rise of the Powers of X #5, the X-Men at last bring down Enigma. The mutants are able to murder and rebirth the Phoenix Force, a cosmic force of change carried out by Jean Grey, so their triumph is feasible. This point of rebirth ties the Phoenix to all mutants, past, present, and future who provide their strength in the fight against Enigma. Jean Grey guides these powers; she decides to deliver the last blow with a manifestation of Wolverine's claws. But this time the raw cosmic power of all mutantkind coats the bones rather than adamantium.
One legendary hero is branded "the Omega Mutant" - the final hero standing when everyone else falls as the X-Men beat their ultimate enemy.
In an amazing extra detail, Luciano Vecchio, the artist of the issue, recently visited X and revealed a numbered guide to the several mutants who constitute Jean Grey's Phoenix power and its Wolverine claws.
