Finster Turns into a monster to oppose the Power Rangers.
Finster was always shown in the original show as a master of his trade, but he never a master of the battlefield, hence he never saw on or dispatched to fight the Rangers personally. He even upholds that same position in the comics. He leaves the fighting to his creations even if he becomes the main enemy for one of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic arcs. In the universe of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return, he barely avoids death, outliving Rita Repulsa and the rest of their crew.
Years of living alone and eating Putties to survive find him on the moon base, where Rita's secret daughter Selena Repulsa saves him. Finster is sick of the old school Rangers invading his house and ruining his creations when they reappearance to thwart Selena's intentions to bring her mother back from the Morphin Grid. With his clay, he shapes himself into a towering mass of a creature with five arms; the fifth uses a sharp sickle for a hand. For a brief period, he shockingly beats the Rangers; until, the new Green Ranger permanently puts him down.
The Monster-Maker from Power Rangers at last becomes a monster himself.
It's interesting that it took this long for a Power Rangers creative team to send Finster on the battlefield and creatively apply his clay.
Apart from signifying the first time Finster truly battles the Power Rangers, it's an innovative way to see Finster positioned to fight. Using his characteristic clay to change himself, the last form he chooses is creative itself. It shows how flexible Finster's clay is—it can be used to make monsters as well as transform someone like him into one. It is odd, in a sense, that it took a Power Rangers creative team this long to send Finster into the battlefield and apply his clay so artistically.
The Power Rangers Just Took on a Monster Fans Have Been Waiting 30 Years to See
Thirty years later the Power Rangers at last face an opponent they least imagined. Every week the original Mighty Morphin squad would face off against a different monster, and occasionally they would find themselves on the battlefield battling reoccurring enemies. Sometimes even Lord Zedd would get his hands filthy. Other opponents would essentially hide in the background.
Written by Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson, with artwork by Nico Leon, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 eventually makes one such background foe, Rita Repulsa's resident monster maker, Finster a threat decades in the making. Though Finster was always a maker rather than a fighter, in this issue he joins the battle to guard Rita Repulsa's daughter from the Rangers.
Just how shockingly character-driven this change is for such a minor villain, which is even more imaginative than how Finster's terrible metamorphosis is shown.
Finster's reasons shockingly humanize him for a simple thug hired just to serve the Empress of Bad. Given anyone in his situation would get enraged, it almost makes him relevant. From Finster's vantage point, the Rangers have harassed him nonstop while he is trying to follow his master; now, his house has been attacked in the process. The Power Rangers push Frankenstein over the brink, nearly killing him, therefore motivating him to become the Monster.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: BOOM! Studios is currently having sales for Return #4.
Over the years, Rita Repulsa has launched several horrific attacks against the Power Rangers; sometimes, her evil tongue causes most damage.
The show has been running for decades, and some viewers know rather well the several enemies the Rangers have encountered. Although Rita Repulsa is notorious for her terrible attacks, the showrunner has strived to maintain her humanity. Rita's more subdued methods of influencing the Rangers have been seen several times by the viewers; her humor is her main instrument for this. With deft comments and wordplay, viewers have seen her use her tongue as a weapon to try to undermine the moral of her enemies.
Rita is a smart manipulator who understands how to leverage her words. She has learnt to utilize her mouth to seize the Rangers' emotions for her advantage even though she does not personally take the fight. Finster's monster raises questions about Rita's future use of her wit or will resort to more forceful methods, though. For viewers, this will be an interesting component to keep an eye out for in the following series segments.
