Yellow Lightsaber Era: Dark Side Temptations for Luke Skywalker
Comprising the events between Episodes V and VI, the "Yellow Lightsaber Era" in Star Wars canon is almost over. And with it, Luke Skywalker's seeming flirtation with the dark side of the Force is likely to culminate in a crucial test. Will Luke, the hope lighthouse for the galaxy, give in to the seductive draw of the Sith?
Star Wars: Handmaid and Grifter, Darth Vader #48
Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Raffaele Ienco, a preview of "Star Wars: Darth Vader #48" finds Luke caught in a web of mystery. Renowned grifter Warba, who Luke knows, lures him to a far-off planet bearing a mysterious message. Though he suspects a trap, Luke's curiosity drives him to probe. Meeting Warba, the grifter is suddenly abducted by Sabé, one of Padmé Amidala's former Handmaidens. Sabé's goal is obvious: she wants to find Luke's actual Force capacity.
Testing Luke Skywalker's Dark Side
Once Sabé easily saves Warba, she reveals her actual mission. She releases a barrage of blaster fire at Warba with disturbing intent, driving Luke to step in. With his yellow lightsaber, Luke fiercely blocks the blaster bolts, but Sabé's merciless test ends in Warba injured. Seeing this needless act of violence, Luke's resentment explodes and he yells, "Enough!" This eruption sets Sabé's mysterious reaction, "There it is...".
Motive of Sabé: Driving Luke into the Dark Side
Sabé's acts obviously seek to set Luke on a trip towards the dark side of the Force. But just why? The most likely explanation holds that Sabé is getting Luke ready for his unavoidable conflict with Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Thinking that the only road to success is the dark side, she tries to provide Luke the tools he need. Still, another viewpoint exists.
Sabé has always shown her moral compass; she declined to take part in Vader's "box test" and showed real sympathy for Warba. Her choice to tempt Luke with the dark side thus seems contradictory. Maybe her actual goal is to make sure Luke has the will to turn away the seductive appeal of the dark side.
Unwavering Loyalty: Saving Padmé's Son
Sabé acts out of relentless devotion to her former mistress, Padmé Amidala. As Padmé's Handmaiden, Sabé committed her life to her safety—a dedication that spans mortality. Sabé now works to guard Padmé's son, Luke. Sabé's rigorous training program for Luke explains his relentless loyalty even if it means guiding him toward the dark side.
Sabé still has an uncertain ultimate aim. Maybe she wants to prove Luke's resiliency against the Empire's seductive influence or empower him with the dark side to destroy it. Sabé is clearly committed to Luke's welfare regardless of her intentions.
Luke's Yellow Lightsaber Era: An Epiphany
Sabé's unrelenting pursuit of Luke toward the dark side emphasizes the importance of this turning point in his path. Will he reject the darkness entirely or embrace it, giving in to its seductive force? Luke Skywalker's and the galaxy's fate rests on a knife's tip. With a look into Luke Skywalker's inner conflict as he negotiates the dangerous road between the light and the dark, the forthcoming "Star Wars: Darth Vader #48" promises to be a turning point in the Star Wars saga.
