The Joker is one of the most well-known villains, not only in comic books, but the world over! He's been in countless movies, shows, and games! But, what if this supervillain isn't simply evil?
A Complex Villain
Many think The Joker is just pure evil. However, some believe that the Joker has a surprisingly complex personality with some deeper motivations and reasons behind what makes him tick. What is so incredible about him is that this character shows an oscillation of moods. One where he can be silly and make jokes. The next, is to go on murderous rampages, leaving Batman's friends and others with trauma.
When the Joker is Sane
There have been a few points when The Joker isn't as crazy, like what happens in JLA #15 where the Martian Manhunter uses his powers and temporarily takes away the Joker's insanity. That short window, helped show how remorseful he is! For those few moments the Joker expressed a deep sense of guilt about the thousands he's hurt, leading some to ask to be punished, wanting to die as he wanted to atone for his terrible actions. He even expresses the same feelings in JLA #84 as well, something that gets to the real core of this iconic villain!
The Joker and His Redemption
There have been a few points that show The Joker's change! He may have gone through major trauma, even as a sane person, showing that there may be another side to his world!
- In Superman: Distant Fires, the Joker finds himself cured by nuclear radiation and ends up using his skills to improve people's lives. He even shows an incredibly compassionate heart welcoming Superman to their small community after this event!
- The Joker finds a sense of redemption in other universes as well!
- The "Bizarro" Joker gets changed through a spell and takes on this crazy transformation and this version becomes the embodiment of a highly sensitive and emphatic person!
- In the storyline "Emperor Joker" there's a really unique take on this character, as he feels the need to fix the whole universe. His attempt at saving it? Destroying it so he can fix all the problems once and for all. While its an odd way to redeem the universe and there was a massive conflict involved!
- Another tale of a hero's journey, can be seen in Year of the Villain: The Joker #1 which is where this epic villain manages to reunite a kid and mom! While not done in a perfect way, he does end up reuniting the family, even though that may come with his classic threatening style!
- In "Batman: White Knight" we even get to see another side of the Joker when he becomes the person, Jack Napier and wants to be "a good person!"
- Even as the Joker kills Batman, it seems this isn't a triumphant moment, as it looks like the villain takes on a more simple life in "Batman: Going Sane"!
A Hero Inside
There have been a few different universes where there is an even more powerful side of the Joker. That even makes this villain one of the more important stories for all of DC Comics! It’s wild to think that the character is both evil and good. However, there have been some really remarkable moments that might convince even the biggest skeptic!
So, what have these comic adaptations helped to bring about?
- This isn't simply about what is crazy or insane. There is evidence, including an interesting view into what might have brought "The Joker" to the extreme situations he finds himself in! Fans might appreciate "Batman Vol. 3: The Joker Year One"
- That is where you will see just what may be behind his violent actions, possibly a trauma!
Regardless, "The Joker" is going to stay with us for ages to come and some aspects show him capable of heroism. What this has helped create for comic enthusiasts and other audiences alike is a compelling series that gives "The Joker" a brand new image, creating a real enigma for everyone.
