One Piece has spun a complex network of linked secrets over the years, with the Void Century and the so-called D Clan at the core. The startling discovery that the world of One Piece is sinking has piqued more interest in the Egghead Arc; one idea holds the devil fruits could be the key to all these riddles.
Among the most often accepted ideas about Imu is that he might have some relationship to the sea. When spelled backwards, imu is read as "umi," which rather literally means sea or in Japanese and Oda is not unusual with such puns. Another well-liked hypothesis is that Imu might be an umibozu, a Japanese yokai known to upset the waters and sink ships. If so, the World Government might be purposefully weakening devil fruit consumers in order to simultaneously increase Imu's power and flood the One Piece universe. Should this be the case, the enigmatic D initial may really be "Devil," so the gods' natural rivals would be naturally occurring.
Although it sounds a little fanciful at first that the whole Ancient Kingdom may be composed by devil fruit addicts, both Professor Clover and Vegapunk have characterised the Void Century as a struggle of competing ideas. The globe Government was probably against this unrestricted freedom and probably turned to sinking the globe to murder them all in one fell sweep. The Devil Fruits reflect freedom in the most authentic meaning of the word, by making any power imagined a reality.
Vegapunk's idea on the development of the Devil Fruits similarly presents them as a highly advanced scientific construct rather than a product of magic which says it is most likely the Ancient Kingdom that brought them into being along with the Ancient Weapons. The twenty kingdoms might have so considered the devil fruit consumers as dangerous or ugly. This would also help to explain the beginnings of the myth that devil fruits are hated by the sea if Imu, one of the first twenty kings, is in fact linked to the sea in some capacity. This idea is further supported by the absence of devil fruit powers among the Celestial Dragons perched on the Red Line. As shown with Boa Hancock and her sisters, at best the Celestial Dragons have been observed serving demon fruits to their captives as either punishment or entertainment. Even more likely is the World Government's attempt to discredit them by calling them "devil fruits". When it comes to investigating the poneglyphs, the World Government has done before, even branding Nico Robin as a demon child and calling the academics at Ohara demons devils. Doflamingo seems to know far more about the matter than he reveals, so he is the only World Noble known to have a devil fruit power.
If so, the war raging since the Void Century might be one between the self-appointed "gods" of the planet and the too ambitious "devils". Often referring to themselves as the gods who created the earth, the World Nobles obviously see themselves as above all other living entities and races. Respectedly, Imu too refers to himself in the third person using the pronoun "mu," implying he might have been the origin of this deity complex among the World Nobles.
Though from Lily's letter it is likely that the D Clan were a group carrying the flag of the Ancient Kingdom's principles, it is impossible to be clear exactly where they fit within this great narrative. Many people having the D initial have come from One Piece, and many of them have similar free-spirited and ambitious nature. Though the twenty kingdoms may have labeled the Ancient Kingdom as demons, the D Clan most certainly adopted the name assigned to them and made it their own; this is a show of defiance itself. As it only makes sense thematically that Doflamingo refers to the D Clan as the natural foes of the gods, this would also wonderfully explain why. This also reinforces the premise that, should one possess the same set of values that challenge the World Government, anyone may be or becomes a D. Many supporters have speculated that Nefertari Lily only became a D after she abandoned the World Government and it would undoubtedly make sense if the initial stood for demon. This would also help to explain why D Clan members originate from many different species all throughout the planet.
If the so-called devils were out to be the ones trying to preserve the planet from total oceanic sinking, it would most definitely be ironic. The so-called gods of One Piece, the Celestial Dragons have been absolutely nasty, bringing suffering wherever they go. Though they consider themselves as gods, the Fiver Elders and even Imu may all seem to change into yokai and terrible monsters themselves.
The alleged devils, like Luffy, have been giving the underprivileged freedom and happiness; so, their fate after all may be quite different. Fans could now consider the last sentence in Nefertari Lily's letter, which suggests the D Clan is destined to oppose the globe Government's nefarious aims to cleanse the planet, to be "bear the flag of the dawn against the "sinking" world." That said, given things in One Piece are not that unambiguous, there is undoubtedly more to the riddle. The Ancient Kingdom cannot be forgiven for producing weapons of mass destruction; so, it is still unclear why Joyboy wants to pass on these weapons—probably where the moral uncertainty Vegapunk highlighted arises.
