The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Finale: A Heartbreaking Letdown?
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 dropped a bomb. It wrapped up the show's story and everything those Hargreeves siblings were through in four seasons and a half-dozen timelines, and that's where it gets messed up.
After the chaos of the latest apocalypse, Season 4 brought them to a new timeline, with all their powers back and the need to, once again, save the world. But, this time, the solution involves...killing them off. Like a big 'nope, you guys are done' moment. Not cool! It’s a twist that no one was ready for!
Sacrificing the Hargreeves
The Ending might have been tragic, but the show's writers were kinda trying to play with the big, serious themes like family, destiny, and how far you'd go to make things right. You’d think making them sacrifice their lives for the greater good would be powerful stuff. Sadly, the final episode doesn’t connect the dots for the audiences and instead of feeling emotionally satisfying it felt like a bunch of plotholes and weird story choices that just threw a cold wet blanket over those really complex ideas! Fans were definitely disappointed.
The thing that was totally out of place was that this whole, "let’s make the Hargreeves cease to exist so they don’t mess up the world" moment happened really suddenly! We're not talking a well-placed twist; it was a little dramatic, as if the creators ran out of steam.
The World Will Forget Them
Let’s be honest: That’s a tough one to swallow! They lose all of their individual struggles, all their victories, all their battles and everything that made the show so special, like poof, vanished! And the worst part of this "reset" thing is their kids (Alison's kid and Diego's family) don't exist, which seems weird because they had to put those children in the timeline-jumping subway in order to save them.
Seriously? No one's gonna remember those wild adventures? And not only is that kind of meaningless to the viewers, it's super meaningless to the characters. We just spent four seasons rooting for them and now those heartfelt moments of their individual growth - their bonding - the relationships, they're gone!
Love and Loss In Season 4
Season 4 just wasn't great. While there were some seriously epic scenes and intense situations, the relationships weren’t great! Take Five and Lila’s romance. It’s super dramatic to see Five and Lila fall in love – but that moment took away some of Lila’s and Diego's bond and, worst of all, messed with Five and Diego's relationship! Why even do that?
The thing that bothered the fans even more? Sloane didn’t show up! Yeah, that lady from season 3? We just completely forgot about her! This really makes you wonder: Is this a super quick rewrite of the show or are the show creators actually making up storylines as they go? Plus, the connection between Jennifer and Ben - we all had this weird love-hate relationship with their stories and now this Ending was super awkward.
More Story, Less Romance
The only good thing we've got from all this season 4 chaos is all those scenes of The Umbrella Academy family. They are a family! The show always excelled at those brother and sister moments, with all their super-powered abilities.
Maybe it would've been great if the showrunners had worked more on giving those relationships more room to breathe. You could argue that some of their most exciting moments involved family members and not romances, and a lot of viewers loved those moments. So what if, for once, the season was less about romance, and a bit more about how the Siblings actually handle being a family – and not necessarily how they're navigating their feelings for everyone else.
Why "The Umbrella Academy" Still Remains A Good Show
The final season felt really abrupt - a little more thought would've helped! I think fans can say that overall "The Umbrella Academy" is still a great series, full of heart, excitement, and humor.
Hopefully, it will give those who didn't get a good resolution to their favorite characters more of a sense of closure, maybe in a movie – who knows? You could argue the writers tried to get away with this grand but really not very satisfying ending. I think a lot of fans would say: "we love The Umbrella Academy for everything it did – but that Finale was like watching our family go into the Bermuda triangle!" We'll all be wishing for another, more fulfilling ending. And with everything that's gone on – all the wild timelines and that crazy Hargreeves family - The Umbrella Academy has really got the right to have those “what if?” moments stick with its audience long after the credits roll.
