Almost Cast As Superman Jude Law
Superman: Flyby was a shelved effort to present a quite different version of the character. Under J.J. Abrams, the doomed film started filming in the early 2000s, preceded by Brandon Routh's 2006 continuation of Christopher Reeve's Superman and before he would cause ripples in Hollywood with Cloverfield. Except this time Superman would die, visit his father Jor-El in heaven, and be reborn to fight four terrible Kryptonians on Earth. It was meant to reenact Superman's origin story. The story was clearly off-piste, and if first ideas went forward, it might have been even more odd.
Reportedly asked for the titular part (via The Playlist), Jude Law turned it down, saying "I instantly thought, 'No, you can't – you can't do this. You cannot't I also failed to sell myself to myself." Law even got as far as dressing in the outfit for the film, which he characterized as "metallic," implying that it might have looked like the Superman suit of Nicolas Cage in the also-cancelled Superman Lives. Though pictures of Jude Law in the famous attire would never show, it's easy to see where the actor was drawing from.
The Best Roles of Jude Law Show Why He Was Mistaken for Superman
Jude Law would later star in a superhero film nevertheless, as Captain Marvel's evil Yon-Rogg. But the contrasts between Superman and Yon-Rogg highlight why Law would never have worked as Superman. Among his more well-known performances are Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beast series, Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Inman in Cold Mountain. Jude Law apparently thrives in portraying morally difficult characters, which does not fit Superman's perfect innocence.
Still, Jude Law would be a great addition to the DCU in still another capacity. As the first film Superman approaches—in which the rather obscure David Corenswet starring in the eponymous role—Casting choices for DC's new cinematic franchise are progressively becoming known. These casting choices have been greeted favorably thus far; placing Jude Law in a nuanced role - either malevolent or heroic - would play to his skills far more than Superman could ever allow.
Superman's Historical Background
The last son of Krypton fled his dying planet to crash land on Earth and be raised as Clark Kent, essentially launching the entire universe of superheroes. Known better worldwide as Superman, the Man of Steel, Justice League leader, and most famously DC Comics Universe hero, he is Kal-El of Krypton, blessed with the powers of a deity, battles cosmic as well as little foes in his relentless search of truth, justice, and a better future.
For filmmakers, Casting Superman has always presented a difficulty. Though many outstanding actors have performed Superman, only a few number are really suited for this part. Choosing the right actor has always presented a difficulty for the directors, however this one has worked well.
Jude Law Is Right; He Would Not Have Worked as Superman
Jude Law is a well-known actor with many iconic parts to his credit, yet he is right when he says he would not have produced a decent Superman. One of the most well-known superheroes in movies, Superman has starred in four films during the past century.
Starting the superhero genre as we know it today, the focus has been on casting directors to make sure performers can equal Christopher Reeve's Man of Steel interpretation. Likewise, the performers playing the venerable DC character often face great pressure to make sure they do it right. This has thus been a quite successful endeavour thus far. From all of Superman's live-action performances, the Man of Steel performers have generally been well-liked by the fans; this has only become more true as early days of Superman's film history pass. Henry Cavill's performance as the most current version of Superman on the big screen is a great example; even people who disapproved of the DCEU chronology expressed sadness that the actor would no longer be in the role moving ahead.
