Why Alicent and Criston are having a sexual relationship in House of the Dragon Season 2?
Beyond mere desire and two gorgeous individuals wanting to fuck each other, Alicent and Criston have a sexual connection in House Of The Dragon Season 2 for a number of reasons—which seem to be few indicators they truly enjoy each other. Rather, it reflects their attitudes concerning Rhaenyra and about themselves.
For Alicent, a couple things apply. The scenes with Larys Strong and Alicent's feet were about power and knowledge; it is not to be underlined that this is the first instance so far of her genuinely experiencing sexual autonomy: she was pushed into marrying King Viserys and had to fulfill what's considered her job. Though there's maybe a sense of freedom here as Alicent is in control, it's interesting that Criston Cole is the guy she has chosen to go through it with. When Alicent and Rhaenyra were younger, Criston was among several wedges separating them. Alicent's perspective of her friend shifted when the knight sleeping with the princess did; it also helped to solidify their already widening distance. Alicent also obviously yearned for the kind of independence Rhaenyra possessed at the same time. She is losing something by having sex with Cole, and she is getting to have the experience she has long been denied.
The start of Alicent Hightower & Criston Cole's relationship?
Just when Alicent and Criston's romance began is one of the other fascinating topics. Based on conversation in the season 2 opener, in which Alicent states it cannot happen again, the implication is that the Relationship was previously established rather than that being the very first time. Should that be the case, though, how far back does it go? After all, the chronology of House of the Dragon Season 2 catches just a few days following the ending of season 1.
There was a chance for it to happen as Alicent and Criston were indeed close even before Viserys died. Two season 1 lines that would match it are Rhaenyra's charge of Alicent "hiding beneath the cloak of [her] own righteousness," from episode 7, and Alicent's own words to Criston regarding "the love you have for me as your Queen." That allows space for it to be feasible but is hardly proof-positive. Her sense of superiority was what she had to hang on, hence it would be shockingly (if not impossibly) hypocritical for her to be having sex with Criston at that moment. She fulfilled her marriage responsibilities with Viserys; a connection before his death may too much contradict her narrative. Furthermore unusual, I believe, would be never having seen it before now. Hiding from the characters makes sense; hiding it from the audience makes less sense.
What Relationship Means For House Of The Dragon Between Alicent & Criston Cole?
As evidenced at the ending of House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1, Alicent Hightower and Criston Cole's relationship already clearly affects everything. Blood and Cheese were killing the prince while the duo was in bed together, which should not only cause both of them to feel more remorse and shame but also raise doubts regarding exactly where the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard was when it was happening.
Fire & Blood does not have this Relationship, hence there is no pattern for where it will go; but, this merely makes the second House of the Dragon subplot more fascinating. Beyond that, it will be fascinating to see how their connection develops and how much it influences their decision-making. Speaking to Aemond, Criston defends Alicent by implying he does have some affection for her that would effect his decisions. The same, so far, cannot really be said for Alicent, but when the Dance of the Dragons moves forward the remorse and self-loathing over it could well be evident.
The Complicated Relationship between Alicent Hightower and Criston Cole in House of the Dragon Season 2
The revelation that Alicent Hightower and Ser Criston Cole are having a sexual connection surprises House of the Dragon season 2 more than a violent death. Alicent and Criston would naturally be spending a lot of time together as two well-known members of the Green faction of House of the Dragon. That much was evident even in season 1, when he swore allegiance to Alicent after distancing himself from Rhaenyra Targaryen. Well, though, in season 2 sworn sword gains a whole different connotations.
The season 2 opening features two sex scenes between Alicent and Criston: one with him kissing the Queen Mother orally and the other with them in bed together... as Cheese and Blood are killing Prince Jaehaerys. Of course, the Game of Thrones series is not unusual in terms of sex, but there cannot be any charges of gratuitousness here. Rather, it's a connection that speaks much about its two players.
House of the Dragon: Further Examining the Relationship Between Alicent and Criston
Someone else besides Helaena, who appears improbable to tell anyone unless she bluffs it out without realizing, may also find their secret. It would create huge controversy, embarrassing Team Green as a whole as well as them (Westeros PR is crucial, and although many others do far worse, breaking promises will, formally, be considered as a Bad Thing). Fire & Blood does not show this relationship, hence there is no template for where it will go; but, this merely makes the second House of the Dragon subplot more interesting.
Preceding Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon explores the events leading to the Civil War that tore Westeros, the Dance of the Dragons. Examining issues of power, ambition, and treachery, the show explores the intricate dynamics of the Targaryen dynasty and the political environment of Westeros. Fans of the Game of Thrones universe should definitely check House of the Dragon for its amazing visuals, gripping narrative, and likable characters.
