Alerting Note: SPOILERS for the first, second, and third Acolyte episodes are found in this page. Though a fresh piece of artwork may have started to untangle it, The Acolyte episode 3 was among the most enigmatic chapters in the Star Wars show thus far. After The Acolyte episode 3—a flashback of Mae and Osha's early years on Brendok— viewers were left with several unresolved questions. Revealed part of Mae and Osha's origins, the episode included a fresh coven of Force-wielding witches on Brendok and more, although it did not bring the story it started to close. Now, though, a piece of art might have started to cover those gaps.
Star Wars posted a piece of artwork showing The Acolyte episode 3, and it might include a very faint clue of what actually happened on Brendok. From the fire to Mae and Osha, many of the most significant elements in The Acolyte episode 3 are featured in the artwork, but it also includes some fascinating details absent from the episode itself. Both The Acolyte's enigmatic Sith Lord and the Jedi were standing on opposite sides of the Bunta tree on Brendok in the background of the artwork. The inclusion of the Sith Lord suggests that they were the ones were in charge of the fire that wiped off the Brendok Witches.
This picture might simply be a creative rendition of The Acolyte episode 3, and the Sith Lord was added only to show the duality between Mae and Osha. There is some evidence, though, that this is a reasonable clue of what the show may feature. Including the Sith Lord, who wasn't even in the episode to start with, would help to show Mae's proximity to the dark side as compared to Osha's Making that point with the Sith Lord would have simply confused things unless there was a more underlying motivation for their presence.
A few hints in the Artwork itself also suggest the Sith Lord's hand in Brendok's fire. The two are visually connected since the image's smoke and flames are emanating from behind them. Moreover, everything in the picture revolves on the Bunta tree, from which Mae obtained the poison meant to kill Torbin in The Acolyte episode 2. That would suggest that Mae values poison more than only as a weapon. When Qimir objected, Mae said she had to kill Torbin "her way," which would indicate Bunta had some more underlying significance.
The third Acolyte episode was narrated nearly entirely from Osha's point of view, and some significant events of the evening were omitted totally. The program will most likely go over that flashback from another perspective and discuss how the witches were actually exterminated. Though hints like this Artwork make every new episode even more fascinating, it is only a matter of time until the mystery of The Acolyte is fully exposed.
Designed to build to a significant reveal, the Acolyte series makes evident that the truth behind the Witches of Brendok is absolutely vital in that mystery. Early episodes of the show have been dropping hints and clues; this artwork is the most recent example. It reminds us that the real reasons of the characters are still under hiding and that the narrative is more complex than first looks.
One franchise with well-known appealing visuals is Star Wars. The artwork deftly shows how visual signals could provide complexity and mystery to a narrative by including faint suggestions of the Sith Lord's participation in Brendok's devastation. It also reminds us that even apparently little elements could have great importance.
More artwork and other visual signals will probably show up as the show goes on, providing suggestions about the actual nature of the characters' motivations and the forthcoming story turns. These cues will keep viewers on the tip of their seats, excitedly awaiting the next episode and the mystery's final answer.
