The Acolyte is clearly situated during a period of transition in the Sith, when an Apprentice is getting ready to challenge their Master. Either they have hired their Acolyte, or they are looking for one; in either scenario, Amandla Stenberg's Mae is most likely the Acolyte in issue. Thus, the competition driving the Rule of Two pulls the Jedi investigating Mae's Jedi murders into the center of the darkness.
Star Wars mythology holds that there are only ever two Sith: one to wield power and another to yearn for it. This dynamic is unstable and naturally competitive, meant to culminate in slaughter. Should the Apprentice fail to topple their Master, they will be dead and another Apprentice will be looked for. Should they be successful, they will become the Master and will know one day they will share their Master's fate. This is The Acolyte's narrative.
Palpatine dropped the Rule of Two and turned into a Sith heretic. As Star Wars: The Bad Batch shows, he aimed to become immortal by cloning and a dark side Force power called essence transfer rather than to be replaced by his Apprentice. Palpatine knew doing so would eventually lead to his death, an occurrence he could not allow again, thus when he returned from the grave in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he sought no other Apprentice.
Though he claimed to be the Sith, Palpatine thought of them as only tools to a goal. He advanced personally using the Rule of Two, then played fast and free with it all over the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He started trying to undermine the ways of the Sith as soon as he was in a place of power, making sure his own Apprentice never chose an Acolyte of her own. The Acolyte will expose the fate Darth Sihetic sought so desperately to avoid.
Leslye Headland, the showrunner for Acolyte, at last reveals the title will explore the fate of every Sith Lord - and Palpatine's biggest fear. For 47 years, the Sith Order has remained enigmatic; but, Leslye Headland's The Acolyte will at last remove the mask to expose their actual nature. Set one century before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte will expose secrets of the Sith - and of the Rule of Two.
Speaking with Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni in an interview published by Star Wars, Headland at last clarifies what The Acolyte's title denotes. "My area of interest in research was the Sith. the dynamic of the Master-Apprentice. Should the Apprentice is yearning the Master's power, he will eventually have to enlist his Apprentice to challenge the Master. and that is The Acolyte. Star Wars mythology has already referenced acolytes; Headland is actually using the old Expanded Universe's name. But the concept has never been so fully defined prior.
