Naruto Tailed Beast: An All-Inclusive Handbook of the Strong Bijuu
The rich mythology of the Tailed Beast, or Bijuu, and their Jinchuriki—the humans who host them—defines the fascinating universe of Naruto. Central to the story, these powerful beings shape destinies and cause strife. This all-inclusive guide looks at every Tailed Beast, their special skills, and the amazing Jinchuriki who wield their great strength.
Describe the Tailed Beast and Explain Their Control.
Born from the chakra tree of the Otsutsuki clan, the nine Bijuu constitute a force of nature capable of great destruction. In an attempt to stop anarchy, the Sage of Six Paths split the ten-tailed monster, Juubi, into nine lesser beings with individual chakra signature and terrible powers. These animals prowl the earth as wild demons, or more usually, are used as weapons of war by the several ninja communities.
Sealed inside human hosts known as Jinchuriki, the Bijuu are under control in terms of power. The Jinchuriki can use the strength of the Bijuu by means of this symbiotic relationship, which can be harmonic and respectful or marred by conflict and servitude and cause the beast to go wild. The Jinchuriki's ability will define how they can use the Bijuu's power; loss of control usually results in the beast breaking free and causing damage.
Shukaku: Sandy One-Tailed Tanuki Beast
One-tailed Beast Shukaku is strongly linked to the Hidden Sand village. Before being sealed inside an unborn Gaara, its first known Jinchuriki was the priest Bunpuku; another unidentified host followed. Physical design of Shukaku is inspired by a tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog. Though Shukaku is the weakest of the Bijuu, he is quite proud and always tries to make up for his single tail, especially with relation to his rivalry with Kurama.
Shukaku is ideal mascot for the Hidden Sand since his main skill is sand manipulation. Originally struggling with the Bijuu's control, Gaara, Shukaku's Jinchuriki could be controlled in his sleep. But as Gaara grew stronger, he acquired the Bijuu's power and became friendly with Shukaku, so treating him as an equal rather than a weapon.
Matatabi: The Firey Two-Tailed Cat Beast
A prime illustration of past Tailed Beast exploitation is Matatabi, the Two-Tailed Beast. Captured by Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage of Konoha, Matatabi was sold to a peace-minded Hidden Cloud village. Yugito Nii is the only known Jinchuriki of Matatabi; he inherited the beast as a young child and subsequently became a Jonin.
Inspired by two Japanese mythological creatures—the Bakeneko and the Kasha—Matatabi's look is blue flame-covered. It fits the Hidden Cloud maybe better since it mostly uses fire-based methods. Though fiery, Matatabi is among the less aggressive Tailed Beast, which may help Yugito to control the beast under reasonable means.
Isobu: Three-Tailed Armoured Sea Beast
Also sold by Hashirama under the Five Kage Summit agreement, this time to the Hidden Mist village, Isobu, the Three-Tailed Beast, Isobu was forcibly locked inside Rin Nohara, close friend of Kakashi Hatake, with intentions to release her onto the Leaf Village during the start of war. Rin gave her life, though, to stop injuring the people she loved.
Following Rin's death, Isobu was finally housed in Yagura Karatachi, the Fourth Mizukage. Mostly a water-based creature, Isobu reflects her long-standing connection with the Hidden Mist. Its sporadic appearance on Naruto's path implies that Yagura died and Isobu was rebuilt a second time.
Son Gokū: King Beast with Four Tails, Monkey King
Sales of Son Gokū, the Four-Tailed Beast, to the Hidden Rock community sealed Roshi. Roshi and Son Gokū had a polite relationship unlike many Jinchuriki/Bijuu pairings; although Roshi expressed regret for never knowing the Beast's actual name, Drawing a clear link to Naruto's inspiration from Dragon Ball, as acknowledged by Masashi Kishimoto, Son Gokū's design mimics the Monkey King from the Chinese myth Journey to the West.
Though his main skills are lava-based, Son Gokū is renowned for his agility and expert taijutsu. Later on, Naruto takes up this ability and combines it with the Rasengan to produce a devastating attack almost sure to destroy a wounded Madara Uchiha.
Kokuō: The Majestic Five-Teled Beast
Sealed within Han, a strong ninja from the Hidden Rock village, Kokuō, the Five-Tailed Beast, was Like many Jinchuriki, Han perished at the Akatsuki, a group aiming at gathering the Tailed Beast. Though one of the less well-known Bijuu, Kokuō is renowned for using steam nature release—a combination of fire and water. According to Masashi Kishimoto, it is a mix of a horse and a dolphin and prefers a quiet life in the forest.
Reflecting their bitterness against the years of exploitation they endured, Kokuō, along with Matatabi and Chomei, chose to distance themselves from mankind following Naruto's successful release of the Tailed Beast.
Saiken: The Six-Tailed Slum Beast with Slimy Sheels
Along with Isobu, Saiken, the Six-Tailed Beast, came from the Hidden Mist village. Sealed within Utakata, a Hidden Mist ninja who left his hometown during the repressive "Bloody Mist" age, Saiken was The Akatsuki finally killed Utakata, but his narrative was highlighted in a hit Naruto filler arc.
Saiken can attack with sticky and corrosive compounds, has water-based abilities, and looks like a slug. With each village having roughly nine tails overall, it marks the continuation of the power balance between the several villages. A Bijuu is deemed more powerful the more tails it possesses.
Chōmei: The Seven-Tailed Flying Beast
Comparable to a Japanese rhinoceros beetle is Chomei, the Seven-Tailed Beast. Chomei is remarkably calm and laid-back unlike many of its Bijuu kin, maybe helping to explain its less demonic look. It was formerly sealed within Fu, a ninja from the Hidden Waterfall, after being sold to the village by Hashirama.
Chomei's larval state as a young creature reflects its insect-like design. When an adult, it can move with one tail and six blinding powder-emitting wings. Chomei can launch tailed beast bombs, like other Tailed Beasts, but its flying ability makes it a strong and horrible weapon.
Gyūki - The Eight-Tailed Octo-Ox Beast
Gyūki, the Eight-Tailed Beast, was sold to the Hidden Cloud village alongside Matatabi. Finding a suitable Jinchuriki proved challenging, leading to the tragic death of Blue B, the Third Raikage's nephew, after Gyūki rampaged uncontrollably. Gyūki's immense power made it incredibly difficult to control, but the perfect host was eventually found: Killer B.
Killer B, the Third Raikage's adopted son, surprisingly proved compatible with Gyūki. Their relationship blossomed into a harmonious partnership, allowing Killer B to draw out the beast's power at will. Even after Gyūki was extracted by the Akatsuki, it was re-sealed into its former host. Gyūki's appearance is a blend of ox and yokai, with sheep horns and tentacle tails. It is considered the second strongest Bijuu.
Kurama - The Ravenous Nine-Tailed Beast
Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Beast, is regarded as the most powerful of the Bijuu. Unlike the other Tailed Beasts, Kurama was not captured by the First Hokage. It roamed free until Madara Uchiha forced it to fight Hashirama. After Kurama's defeat, it was sealed within Mito Uzumaki, Hashirama's wife, before being transferred to Kushina Uzumaki.
Obito Uchiha extracted Kurama during Kushina's labor, causing chaos in the Hidden Leaf. Minato, the Fourth Hokage, eventually sealed half of Kurama within himself and the other half within their newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki. Kurama resembles a kitsune, a mythical Japanese nine-tailed fox. Its immense power and influence on Naruto's story make it one of the most iconic creatures in the series.
Naruto's relationship with Kurama evolved from fear and conflict to friendship and partnership. Their bond transformed Kurama, and it became a close ally to Naruto and other members of his family. In the Boruto series, Kurama sacrifices its life force to grant Naruto a temporary power boost called Baryon Mode. The Nine-Tails' death had a profound impact on Naruto, but its legacy continues to resonate in the series, with Kurama mysteriously reincarnated within Himawari Uzumaki, Naruto's daughter.
A Catastrophic Force of Nature, The Ten-Tailed Beast
The Juubi, or Ten-Tailed Beast, is the progenitor of all Tailed Beasts. The Otsutsuki clan brought this beast to Earth. The Juubi's exact origin remains unknown, but it is a god-like force of nature with virtually unlimited power. The Otsutsuki clan uses the Juubi's chakra fruit to sustain their long lives and immense power.
Several powerful characters have served as hosts for the Juubi. Obito and Madara Uchiha, after gaining chakra from each of the Bijuu and absorbing the Ten-Tails' husk, became the Sage of the Six Paths. The Juubi's power is virtually unstoppable without the use of Senjutsu, a complex form of Natural Energy.
Isshiki Otsutsuki's Mysterious Juubi
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations introduces a second Juubi. Isshiki Otsutsuki, arriving on Earth with Kaguya, was betrayed by his partner and lost control of the Juubi to Kaguya. He hid and took possession of a human monk named Jigen, plotting his revenge and establishing the villainous organization Kara. Isshiki kept another Ten-Tails in a secret dimension, under constant guard.
Isshiki's Juubi was discovered through Sasuke's Rinnegan and dimensional travel abilities. The beast is smaller and younger than Kaguya's Juubi. Isshiki's goal was to turn this Juubi into a God Tree to grow another chakra fruit. However, after his defeat, his disciple, Code, took control of Kara and manipulated the Juubi's power, transforming it into sentient God-Tree-like creatures that are capturing and repurposing characters like Sasuke. These new villains represent a monumental threat to Naruto's world.
Differences Between Naruto And Boruto’s Tailed Beasts And Jinchiruki
The Tailed Beasts in the Boruto series have different lives compared to their appearances in the Naruto series. While Naruto still possesses Kurama and Killer B continues to host Gyūki, the remaining Bijuu were freed, maintaining a chakra bond with Naruto. This freed them from human control and allowed them to live as they chose.
The Tailed Beasts' chakra bonds with Naruto in Boruto enable them to communicate telepathically, allowing them to work together and respond to threats more effectively. This connection adds another layer of complexity to the relationship between the Bijuu and the Jinchuriki.
