Mirror Universe of Star Trek Is Among Most Attractive Features of Franchise
Originally featured in the second season Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror, Mirror," the Mirror Universe has grown to be among the most often ridiculed, and popular feature of the series. The Mirror Universe is a dismal place. Earth is at the core of a vast empire based on invasion and enslavement. In this dimension, the Vulcans are equally frightening; the goateed Spock radiates evil and brutality. Enterprise, Deep Space Nine, and Discovery have also had appearances in the Mirror Universe, in one form or other. Fans have found it intriguing to see usually moral Starfleet heroes behave horribly.
Apart from cruel parodies on iconic Star Trek characters, the Mirror Universe boasts some of the most terrifying weaponry in the franchise. One of several ways the Terran Empire shows its power are agony booths, used for torture of rebels and dissidents. Even more committed to cruelty are portable agonizers. Still, none of Mirror Universe weaponry was as warped as Kirk's Tantalus Field. Taken from unidentified sources, the Tantalus Device let Kirk covertly annihilate anyone on the ship if he so wanted in addition to spy on everyone else.
The Real Potential of the Tantalus Device
Along with some quite terrible weaponry and a Mirror Universe consisting of villainous replicas of Spock and Kirk, Star Trek has recently proven that one of them is more potent than fans had assumed. DC's Star Trek series revived the Mirror Universe in the middle of the 1980s, and in issue 12 one of their most sinister weapons showed its actual destructive capability.
Mike W. Barr wrote Star Trek #12; Tom Sutton and Ricardo Villagran drew it. Plans to seize the Excelsior and run it as their flagship; the Mirror Universe is invading the Federation. While they are successful in raising their flag on the ship, Scotty and Saavik have rigged the Tantalus Device in Kirk's quarters to focus on specific parts of the Excelsior. They attack Excelsior's engine room using the disintegration capability of the Tantalus Device, therefore rendering the ship disabled.
Among the most potent weapons in Star Trek could be the Tantalus Device.
And in Star Trek #12, the Tantalus Device's actual destructive capability became clear. Ironically, two Prime universe characters— Scotty and Saavik—were needed to unleash its possibilities. Using the Tantalus Device to carry the Excelsior off the table, the pair enhanced its power. In his conceit, Mirror Kirk never considered broadening the scope of the gadget as Scotty and Saavik do in Star Trek #12. Confirming its actual capabilities, the two transform a gadget used in the Mirror Universe just for spying and murder into an incredibly lethal weapon.
