Iron Flame Ending Explained: Xaden's Transformation & Onyx Storm Theories

Iron Flame's Shocking Twist: Xaden's Transformation and What It Means for Onyx Storm!

Iron Flame's Cliffhanger Ending: Xaden's Turn to the Dark Side

Rebecca Yarros' Iron Flame, the second book in the wildly popular Empyrean Series, throws a major curveball in its finale!  We're talking a super unexpected (yet kinda not surprising) twist involving Xaden Riorson which leaves readers totally reeling. After seeing Violet Sorrengail, his love interest become a dragon rider in Fourth Wing (book 1); the focus here is the ever-present war against the venin–this incredibly dark, deadly force.

For the uninitiated, these venin aren't just some mythical monsters. These deadly creatures now represent the biggest, and increasingly realistic enemy they now have to contend with in this fantastical setting that draws immense influence and inspiration from medieval history and cultures; using that particular source material in this creative new storyline. Iron Flame's shocking end sets the stage for Onyx Storm (book 3), leaving readers buzzing with theories about just how and why all those prior character decisions lead up to this extremely explosive and unpredictable climax! The story focuses on how both love and those extremely deeply rooted bonds; friendships and relationships affect each of the characters' own struggles as well as showing that there are truly dark and disturbing things within the magical systems and powers already explored which would now have significant impacts throughout the later chapters.

In Yarros’ world, magic's drawn from the earth. Two ways exist.  Dragon Riders use their dragons as conduits for power.  But using the earth directly is super dangerous! The magic is incredibly powerful. The problem is those methods are intensely damaging to anyone involved! The reason these characters have to rely on other methods are shown beautifully through the narrative: Using dragons helps regulate this powerful energy; acting as a shield or a buffer; yet draining the earth directly is what corrupts humans into becoming those extremely powerful, incredibly dangerous venin.

In Iron Flame's final battle, Xaden, in desperation to save Violet, taps into that raw earth magic. His desperation, the huge efforts needed to produce some last-minute attempt at resolution results in that sudden turning point that totally alters Xaden— corrupting him, slowly morphing him into a venin. That's a crazy change. What’s particularly fascinating: that raw earth-magic doesn't fully transform them immediately; it starts this slow process.  Xaden's eyes turn that iconic reddish glow but the changes otherwise seem incomplete, as his body maintains its physical form in the immediate aftermath.  The story does not fully describe exactly what has to happen. Yet some viewers believe that multiple interactions with that powerful, uncontrolled energy are needed, raising huge implications about just how easily anyone involved in wielding magic in that specific way could quickly find their own life changed permanently and for potentially extremely dire consequences.

What Does This Mean For Onyx Storm? The Venin's True Nature

Iron Flame Book with Prime Video logo Image

Onyx Storm, dropping January 21st, 2025, will definitely dive deeper into the venin. Previously depicted as simple magical villains, this transformation changes everything! This was something that the earlier books played with subtlety; making it a big surprise yet a reveal somewhat anticipated based upon the prior storytelling techniques; the shift of narrative allows these creatures to be even more complex! That reveal also includes Jack Barlowe—another venin, masterfully hidden all along, showing there were deeper organizational aspects and implied plans never really mentioned previously!

Xaden's transformation could show venin as less monstrous. He's now torn between his love for Violet, and loyalty towards this increasingly dark and powerful group and its goals, which totally impact everyone involved. His transformation opens doors for potentially far more intense psychological conflicts which would generate additional emotional intrigue and excitement: there’s plenty of implied potential tensions for a story about friendships, love, and complex moral dilemmas, especially with several individuals intensely bonded emotionally. The book's title (Onyx Storm) almost definitely alludes to this inner turmoil; not just Xaden’s, but others, especially those closest to XadenVioletSgaeylTairn, and Andarna. Their close emotional bonds create many challenges and complex character relationships for an exciting sequel.

Andarna is special— that unique dragon wanting to bond in that special ceremony even though she was way too young. She overcomes serious disadvantages which demonstrates a strength of personality reminiscent of Violet; the overexertion of magic leads to rapid maturity, giving an underdeveloped wing (like Violet!), That wing was incomplete; affecting its capability of producing full lift.  And the incredible twist at the end of Iron Flame?  Her ability to transform between those various colors show that her scales transform color, proving she's an exceptionally rare and immensely important seventh dragon type – one possibly even considered extinct or lost, until she unexpectedly appears now! This extremely rare ability makes her another incredibly vital, highly important piece within those puzzle related events. Unfortunately this rare status increases her value – making her the next, and equally exciting target, something the books also emphasizes strongly during that part!

General Lilith Sorrengail? A seriously tough character! That relationship was strained between her and Violet. She was rather distant— a maternal figure focused almost entirely upon strict military discipline! But this isn’t just some kind, doting figure.    Yet Iron Flame reveals a surprising truth beneath that tough exterior— her incredible, strong devotion towards Violet!

When the wards need re-energizing (through self-sacrifice!), and Violet is willing to die to save everyone, her mom intervenes, accepting her role and fulfilling this difficult task in order to protect her daughter. It is important for many audiences to notice this selfless, extremely profound sacrifice and highlights exactly just how unexpected her hidden depths actually were and it dramatically shows a mother’s devotion. This powerful ending showcases both Lilith’s powerful strength along with a hidden loving devotion toward her children.

The Venin's Plan: What Comes Next?

The wards are back online, temporarily stopping the venin! Yet the situation is far more complex: Jack Barlowe,  another venin, makes clear Xaden’s new inclusion as part of the “fed up family,”  Their organization; implied actions throughout; suggest something larger than simple brute-force attacks— an intricate scheme in progress, the implications become even more immense. While Violet’s efforts might have stopped them temporarily – stopping their immediate threat to those people involved, and that may just postpone it rather than fully stopping it.

Onyx Storm: The Mysteries Remain Unsolved!

Iron Flame and the cover of Fourth Wing against a fiery background Image

The third book,  Onyx Storm, remains pretty shrouded in mystery! We know Xaden’s transformation is that key factor that's going to cause even greater amounts of chaos.   It's going to have serious ripple effects— for everyone involved in these very closely tied and emotional character relationships and deeply close friendships. We need to see how he changes, how he navigates his bond with Violet, and how that would seriously threaten those other ongoing wars in Navarre!

Also noteworthy is the reveal surrounding Andarna's second signet and the potential implications surrounding her role: the fact that the plot threads around that second signet have remained deliberately shrouded from readers creates yet more opportunities to continue this exciting story: it’s implied that  Onyx Storm will address them, emphasizing that readers paying attention are going to find another unique treat waiting for them. Her newly acquired secondary ability could be the ultimate game changer, completely reshaping those potential challenges between characters and altering the very balance of those potential outcomes. This is great for readers—another thrilling development awaiting us soon enough!
