Lee and Washington have worked on Mo' Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998), and Inside Man (2006), in that sequence of release. Each of these Movies explored distinct genres and kinds of people, needing different director and actor approaches, therefore they were somewhat varied. Each of these initiatives has been generally favorably received by viewers and critics, as the table below shows, implying that High and Low will follow the same trend.
High and Low seems to be more of a straight genre Movie than some of Lee and Washington's other works. With many of the now-hallmarks of the criminal thriller genre, Kurosawa's film cleanly fits it. Given this, the heist thriller Inside Man is most likely the closest to High and Low since Washington's investigator handles a bank robbery that turns into a hostage scenario.

The Conventions of High and Low
Unlike Inside Man, Washington's character in High and Low would seem not to be police enforcement. Though nothing is yet known, Washington will most likely be fulfilling the exciting new role of the shoe company executive who discovers he is the subject of an extortion campaign. Though it clearly has the elements of an interesting divergence, it is still to be seen how High and Low will stand against Lee and Washington's earlier films together.
