"Dexter: Original Sin" Takes on a Missing Character, But Why?
Ever since "Dexter" came back in "Dexter: New Blood" fans are still curious about the world Dexter Morgan lives in, his family, and those who influenced him! One question that's been bouncing around is about the latest "Dexter" prequel, "Dexter: Original Sin" — and whether the writers will make sure it all fits into that complex Dexterverse. If you're wondering what exactly went down with Dexter's character in this whole “missing character" mess – then keep reading! The answer's pretty easy to explain… sort of!
Some people feel that there should be a "Dexter" prequel that explains exactly how and where it all started for Dexter - kind of like a reboot to those early seasons with the dark deeds happening before we saw the serial killer who hunts serial killers at the end of those episodes! "Dexter: Original Sin" is not doing a total do-over, though. In fact, some of those OG characters, like Dexter’s foster sister Debra Morgan (who Jennifer Carpenter brought back to life so well), and their foster dad Harry Morgan are nowhere to be seen. No appearances, no explanations, nothing! So, where exactly did the Morgan family go?
A Missing Character’s Purpose - The Dexter Original Sin's Timeline
The Missing character in "Dexter: Original Sin" isn’t the only mystery! Fans who love the "Dexter" story need to be thinking a lot about this. Let's talk about Dexter’s childhood - there’s no indication yet if they'll delve deep into that childhood to show us what his original “code" looked like as a youngster. No word about a teenage Dexter or a creepy little brother like Dexter actually had at one point! These “Dexter: Original Sin” stories seem more focused on how the killer personality develops through new characters like "Jim" aka Dexter.
To be honest, the timing of the “Dexter: Original Sin” makes a ton of sense – there’s no reason the stories need to follow the same timeframe. There is an obvious difference in this new timeline for Dexter, and this is one of the ways it all makes sense! We might even get a version of Dexter who’s older when all this dark stuff gets started!
No More Morgan: What "Dexter" is Really Missing
So, are you going to see any "Dexter: Original Sin" moments that would tie into the show, like Dexter killing someone or being caught for being a serial killer? Yeah, maybe – we'll see as this new series starts to play out. But for now, you might not see characters that were critical in the OG "Dexter" storyline because it seems like those characters are still doing their own thing in that alternate universe. It could be super-weird seeing those original storylines and then having to accept these characters don't even exist!
Maybe you need to remember the ending of the original “Dexter" series too. This whole concept of Dexter “being found out" in “Dexter: New Blood” feels more connected to that time when he literally drove into a hurricane in an attempt to end his story and start over as the monster we all thought was never going to get stopped!
"Dexter: Original Sin" — What We Can Still Expect from The Dexterverse
If "Dexter: New Blood" is about this whole “you can't escape yourself, you can't rewrite history" theme, we should know by now that these characters and these situations might play out in a really different way with “Dexter: Original Sin”.
With new stories, a different perspective, and a darker tone to those first season moments we might see more of that sinister, complex character. So you can’t really count the OG characters completely out (we all learned in those last two seasons that "Dexter" is always filled with a ton of surprises and shocking moments) — they could end up showing up at some point, maybe as flashbacks, maybe even with some big connection to the new “Jim”! We're already seeing what a wild, fascinating ride “Dexter" has become! And maybe, "Dexter: Original Sin" will give fans a few more thrilling moments, but I doubt the original Morgan clan will pop up as if this new series was totally written with a script already for everyone!
