June 13, 1944 marked the conclusion of the Battle of Carentan.
As *Band Of Brothers* explains, the Battle of Carentan started right away following D-Day. Due of the amount of American troops injured as part of the combat, elements of the 101st Airbourne Division attacked fortified Germans down what became known as "Purple Heart Lane" starting on June 10. The fighting then raged for four days, with the Germans waging a ferocious offensive trying to recover the poorly defended town. As depicted in *Band of Brothers*, this produced one of the most intense urban activities in the immediate following D-Day.
Though the *Band Of Brothers* episode "Carentan" naturally centers on the experiences of Easy Company, it also makes abundantly evident that the struggle to seize the town was a complicated and merciless affair. Though *Band of Brothers* implies a quite limited time span, Carentan was not seized until June 12. With all companies in the 101st under great pressure until the 2nd armored division offered welcome respite, a strong German counterattack backed by a tank division rendered success anything from assured even then. This finished the fight on June 13.
HBO's *Band of Brothers* Chronicles Many of the Major Engagements in the European Theater Following D-Day, but One of the Most Significant Occured 80 Years Ago, on June 13, 1944.
Among the most potent and memorable features of *Band of Brothers*' output is its rigorous respect of actual History. Though there are significant historical errors, many of Easy Company's activities and encounters are authentically recreated, producing a less spectacular but more realistic story. Not an exception is the way the show presents events on June 13, 1944.

Carentan Was a Very Important Band of Brothers Episode.
Although Carentan was vital in the context of the actual Normandy invasion, it also centralised the fictionalised *Band of Brothers* story. First of all, although the last episode "Day of Days" showed several significant battles for Easy Company and tragic fatalities – noteworthy, Private Hall – "Carentan" is the first time the very terrible consequences of Second World War warfare became obvious. According to the end title card, dozens of Easy Company troops die—65, while many more suffer terrible injuries. Thus, "Carentan" is the first time the whole cruelty of battle is on show.
The way the story unfolds makes the episode especially important as well. While "Day of Days" centers Dick Winters' viewpoint, "Carentan" centers on Private Blithe, therefore highlighting the agony of his experience. Significantly, Blithe is an average man trapped in the furnace of battle rather than a heroic character. "Carentan" is absolutely vital in laying the foundation for *Band of Brothers*' following dramatic and brutal episodes because of his incapacity to absorb the carnage all around him and the growing scope of damage.
Why Was Carentan So Signific Following D-Day?
As detailed in *Band of Brothers* episode 3, Carentan was absolutely vital for the Allies' ongoing success with their Normandy invasion. The village was positioned deliberately halfway between Omaha's and Utah's beachheads. From an American point of view, this meant that seizing it would enable the Allies to advance and build a single contiguous defensive line. This meant that, should a more significant German counteroffensive materialize, Allied forces would be able to fight on one front instead of isolating themselves and readily beaten. From the German point of view, on the other hand, owning Carentan would provide them a clear advantage.
Though D-Day was a significant psychological setback for the Allies, it is sometimes forgotten that the initial plan aimed for the seizure of many French towns — notably Carentan – by the end of the first day. The need of effectively seizing the town become even more critical since the Allies had not reached this goal by the time the Battle of Carentan started on June 10.
Rich with historical detail, *Band of Brothers* leaves nothing known about Lieutenant Meehan's fate following the downfall of his plane on D-Day.
The larger background of the war is part of what makes June 13 conflict so important for *Band of Brothers*. Early miniseries episodes focus on the preparation for D-Day and the attack on mainland Europe itself. Though D-Day is still a very important event in the History of the Second World War, it is sometimes all too easy to overlook the significance of what happened in the immediate aftermath as both Allied and German forces fought to grab the initiative. With its focus on the war around the little village of Carentan, this history adds to the fascinating D-Day follow-up of *Band of Brothers.
