Bruce Campbell's Hysteria! Review: A Rad Horror Comeback

Groovy Horror! Bruce Campbell's Back in Hysteria!, and It's a Killer Evil Dead Throwback!

Bruce Campbell's Hysteria!: A Totally Rad Return to Horror After 6 Years

Bruce Campbell. Need we say more? This legend is best known as Ash Williams in the classic Evil Dead franchise! His iconic role helped solidify him as a huge star in '80s horror (alongside director Sam Raimi). After that very first movie hit the scene in 1981; becoming instantly recognizable, he went on to appear in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, then the amazing TV series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015-2018)! But that all-important comeback took some time; he made that incredible comeback by becoming a key star within the Hysteria! series. After the series’ unexpected conclusion that brought that amazing Ash vs Evil Dead run to its conclusion in 2018; a major absence happened; however Campbell now makes his grand comeback to the horror genre! A comeback well worth the hype!

Now 66, Campbell trades his college-student Ash for a different gig: Chief Dandridge in Hysteria!! The premise is suitably spooky.  He investigates a disappearance amid a Satan-worshipping metal band's rise – bringing the Satanic Panic conspiracy theories and themes from that same era to life! While Hysteria! is great; that alone is noteworthy, showing Campbell’s career going full-circle, a comeback story and a nod to the horror roots that made him so famous! This particular production, especially in contrast with earlier roles, adds significant narrative meaning that shows why such an acting change is both possible and a much-needed step.

Hysteria! isn’t just Campbell's return to horror TV; it’s also a phenomenal tribute to classic horror. The production style and even the plot itself pay homage to '80s horror flicks: It gives the campy charm, showcasing slasher elements mixed with that supernatural flair so iconic in that specific period! The era plays such an important part; making that time setting into something entirely unique and even indispensable; not merely the backdrop. The setting becomes one of the most critical story elements, with many details relating to this plot which wouldn't work otherwise! And those thematic concerns relating to Satanic Panic? Those social phenomena serve as thematic tools! These were real fears; and adding this context adds to the entertainment aspects; making this setting far more relevant to that fanbase!

Plus, Campbell’s presence brings even more nostalgic fun and really appeals to that older generation who remembers exactly what made some of those horror tropes iconic; generating even greater familiarity which helped create this uniquely crafted tribute and a really clever blend between the nostalgic, campy '80s and that chilling storyline involving some truly nasty horror tropes.

From DIY Horror Hero to Experienced Crime Fighter: Campbell's New Role

Hysteria! marks a new era for Campbell! Compare Ash Williams to Chief Dandridge: Ash; the hapless student accidentally unleashed hell; he creates his own tools (chainsaw, boomstick!), becoming this reluctant DIY hero.  Dandridge? Already a seasoned police chief— dealing with things crime-related; facing entirely new threats and even far more serious and unpredictable opponents which changes those very key characteristics about Campbell’s portrayal compared to his far younger role!

This doesn't imply Hysteria! is some brand-new take— those elements were all clearly already done before, this makes it nostalgic! It’s instead what’s been done so wonderfully; using those established tropes for a really fresh, exciting and satisfying conclusion; perfectly designed for those very experienced and nostalgic audiences who fondly recall why some of these themes really appealed to them, perfectly tailored for Campbell’s fans.  This was great!

Those themes of that particular era add depth; not to mention that nostalgia! All that and his fresh character makes it fun and intense. The unexpected character role completely worked for Campbell, giving a much-needed surprise while simultaneously remaining very recognizable; making it absolutely great.
