Creature Commandos: Meet the Cast and Their Creepy DC Counterparts!
James Gunn's DCU Starts With a BANG (and Some Bites!): Creature Commandos!
Get ready for a wild ride! James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe kicks off with Creature Commandos, an animated series featuring some of the weirdest and most obscure DC characters ever! Announced in January 2023 (part of the "Gods and Monsters" Chapter 1), this seven-episode series will be the first new project in this entirely re-imagined universe. The arrival is set for 2024 – making its release incredibly valuable considering this is the launch point; and before that mega Superman movie that everyone has eagerly anticipated.
These characters haven't been seen in live action—ever!— yet Gunn's made it perfectly clear that his DC Universe will share a universe –movies, shows, and cartoons all linked! This is why this new series and the specific choice of these characters truly matters; a chance for crossover! It has huge importance to the general fan community because of what that actually means, this totally restructures those elements found in previous DC-created products, adding significant lore and expanding a far older and potentially forgotten cast!

Creature Commandos' All-Star Cast: A Deep Dive
10. Viola Davis as Amanda Waller: The Ruthless Taskmaster Returns!
Viola Davis— Academy Award winner (Doubt, 2008), Emmy winner (How to Get Away With Murder, 2015)—needs no introduction. This power performer perfectly conveys that air of authority; and this powerhouse delivers that chilling portrayal perfectly, bringing a gravitas only she can. She’s already played Amanda Waller (in Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Black Adam). This is her return to the role – this time in animation! She even stars in her own upcoming show Waller. Her character's role here brings that signature ruthless and ambitious boss overseeing this mission; and adding to the mystery and overall intensity, with her prior appearances suggesting a bigger story arc. This is also expected to affect upcoming storyline expansions and development later.
9. Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.: A Legacy of Action
Frank Grillo (a martial arts expert) excels at intense action roles (The Purge, Kingdom, Captain America: Civil War, and many more!). He plays Rick Flag Sr., father of Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag from The Suicide Squad (who sadly passed away in that title!). This role creates added stakes; he is seemingly expected to carry the show and become that important leading hero, making use of all his amazing action and drama expertise! It seems highly likely his storyline will also continue further into later works.
8. Anya Chalotra as Circe: The Enchantress of Evil
Anya Chalotra (Yennefer in The Witcher) brings that dramatic flair. Her experience perfectly shows her abilities! She takes on Circe; rumored (and probably) to be the main villain in this story; giving the Creature Commandos a serious challenge. The trailers showcase her power. Her expertise in those more mystical storylines really showcases her expertise! She's well known from Wonder Woman comics too; so it perfectly suggests her abilities.
7. Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein: A Monster of Romance
Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Rome, Obi-Wan Kenobi) adds class! She brings the Bride of Frankenstein to life! That role alone has some great moments. She is an important member of that special unit and her unique contributions to it really shows off those subtle elements, showing her importance. In comics she works with SHADE and had a relationship with Frankenstein—creating tons of dramatic potential.
6. Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky: The Amphibian Agent
Zoë Chao (The Afterparty) voices this unique character, she really excels and will continue expanding into later titles; Nina Mazursky—a scientist-turned-amphibian, the trailers clearly show how successful and valuable those characters and roles in this specific environment, and will help continue her own continued expansion in her ongoing career.
5. David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein: From Hawkins to Horror
David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow)— an extremely successful and experienced performer; showcasing his excellent abilities in delivering the character of Frankenstein. He's become familiar across many superhero and comic-book related productions; this character gives those kinds of hints that makes her importance within this universe completely apparent!
4. Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus: Radioactive Revenge!
Alan Tudyk (a legendary performer and seasoned voice actor)—Firefly, Rogue One, even voicing various characters in Young Justice– adds gravitas! He plays the Doctor Phosphorus, this major Batman villain who gets his crazy powers from radiation. The trailers strongly hint towards a hugely intense and powerful role which delivers on all those classic character expectations!
3. Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic: An Original Creation!
Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), this highly accomplished yet new actor takes on Princess Ilana Rostovic –an original character—the trailers reveal a surprising reveal: Circe is out to get her. This is probably why Creature Commandos will be so instrumental in bringing her safety.
2. Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel: Double Duty with Double Trouble
Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls, Guardians of the Galaxy)—working alongside his brother James Gunn yet again. His presence in these shows add the important background detail showing just how this continues to add weight toward this expanded and new DC-based cinematic universe! His characters, Weasel (a reprise) and G.I. Robot, add plenty of unique and hilarious mayhem!
1. Steve Agee as John Economos: A Familiar Face in the Present
Steve Agee's return as John Economos (from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker) adds some significant intrigue. His inclusion means Creature Commandos is in this current DCU timeline! His appearance as part of this amazing ensemble creates a powerful effect! It further ties the animation into those other ongoing narratives and ongoing plots; meaning the contributions to various future productions would increase as well! The entire decision shows this team’s ties to ARGUS and Amanda Waller, which makes for huge possibilities concerning the kinds of storylines which might feature later on. It's subtle, yet massively important, given the importance and legacy surrounding ARGUS' overall function within the expanded DC-created fictional universes and realities that all interweave to some extent!
Conclusion: Get Ready for Some Monster Mayhem!
Creature Commandos promises to be wild, full of those unique personalities. The characters' backgrounds have those little touches that all hint towards a very significant role later in other upcoming stories and various productions! It looks as though this animated show could even be hugely impactful; considering the cast alone!
