Along with Michelle Yeoh, the Blade Runner sequel program from Prime Video features stars of *The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes* and *Euphoria*. For the next development of the *Blade Runner* universe, Ridley Scott sits in the producer's chair. Set fifty years following Denis Villeneuve's *Blade Runner 2049*, the next sequel show is scheduled to start filming in June 2024.
The show has reportedly included *Euphoria* and *Hunger Games* series star Hunter Schafer as a co-lead alongside the already-announced Yeoh, cameras scheduled to roll any day now on *Blade Runner 2099*. Information on Schafer's character is under wraps as well as all other specifics on the much awaited Amazon Prime series.
When Scott's first *Blade Runner* film came out in 1982, science fiction underwent a revolution. With its avant-garde images, the noir-inspired movie set the standard for harsh futuristic sci-fi that would motivate directors for years to come. One of those directors, Villeneuve, took over on 2017's *Blade Runner 2049*, the much awaited follow-up to Scott's original blockbuster.
With just $267 million globally, *Blade Runner 2049* was a box office letdown. Now Scott will turn to Prime Video and the tiny screen once more expanding the universe he first presented back in 1982. Showrunner on *Blade Runner 2099*, Silka Luisa (*Shining Girls*) offers a fresh viewpoint on the material, drawing on a plot Scott has compared to Aldous Huxley's famous book *Brave New World*.
When *Blade Runner 2099* gets Prime Video, it remains to be seen what courageous fresh approach Luisa has in store for fans on Scott's sci-fi universe. After Yeoh and Schafer's additions—the latter of which made a significant impact as Tigris in the latest *Hunger Games* prequel film, after attracting attention as Jules in HBO's *Euphoria*, the cast is becoming exciting. Though *Euphoria* is on break right now, Schafer has time in her calendar to accompany Yeoh, Luisa, and company as they start the most recent iteration of the sci-fi adventure Scott started with Harrison Ford way back in 1982.
Jonathan van Tulleken (*Shogun*) will helm the first two *Blade Runner 2099* episodes.
Seeing what the directors have planned for viewers excites one. The ensemble, particularly with Schafer included, is definitely drawing attention and gives the narrative an other perspective. Seeing how this cast addition will shape the narrative going forward will be fascinating.
