Max Shifts Programming Focus Away From Children's Content Signaling Change For Sesame Street
Max the platform hosting Sesame Street since 2016 released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter indicating a wonderful partnership while also confirming a move towards adult and family content moving forward. Max noted that some library series content will continue to stay on Max in US through 2027 in addition to a large number of previous seasons however new Sesame Street episodes will no longer be produced by them. Season 55 Premiere Proceeding On Max while Long Term Future Remains Uncertain For The Series
The 55th Season of the celebrated series will premiere on Max January 2025 though a selection from the library of Sesame Street will remain on platform through 2027 with current availability of seasons 1 5 7 and seasons 39-54 also available. The shows future remains in doubt since the new long-term programming strategy change in funding by Max.
Sesame Workshop has not yet announced other long term programming deals with streaming services despite their initial desire to explore additional broadcasting or other funding options moving forward. A representative of Sesame Workshop stated to The Hollywood Reporter their intention to maintain the quality of show production while continuing to make the show accessible to a large audience through other distribution plans that are in development in coming months to best serve the needs of young audiences across different platforms.
'Reimagined' Sesame Street With New Animated Series Coming In Season 56
The series was previously in development back in October 2023 that plans to bring forth a "reimagined" version of Sesame Street which will start from Season 56 in the program including an animated spin off series called Tales From 123 that will appear alongside of an 11-minute storyline each program showing how the platform hopes to keep content current.
Max Explains Rationale Behind Ending Long Time Sesame Street Partnership
The strategic decision to end contract from the streaming service Max was largely driven by a desire to re-prioritize all financial resources towards productions that have more appeal with adult audiences and specific types of family viewing such as the up and coming Harry Potter series in development by the platform. According to spokesperson of Max in interview to The Hollywood Reporter the new approach stems from viewer usage feedback data collected from a long list of viewers. The service spokesperson stated Max will emphasize adult and family programming as new episodes for Sesame Street “are not core” to company strategy moving forward from today.
PBS Kids Offers Select Episodes: Max Remains Option Through 2027
Despite these challenges some episodes from Sesame Street remain available to view through the PBS Kids platforms with further access on streaming through 2027 on the Max platform. The streaming service's actions have no current impact for premiere of the new season 55 on the streaming service set to begin January 2025.
