Officially announced are the trio of new performers portraying phony big-screen iterations of the Only Murders In The Building characters. Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez play Oliver, Charles, and Mabel, an unusual trio who bond while producing a true crime podcast about different murders occurring in their New York City apartment building, the Arconia. As a movie is adapted from their popular podcast, the trio will be leaving New York for the first time in the next Only Murders in the Building Season 4.
A behind-the-scenes picture was posted on the official Only Murders Hulu Instagram page disclosing the key character actors from the in-universe film. Eugene Levy will portray Charles, Zach Galifianakis will play Oliver, and Eva Longoria will play Mabel, according to the picture showing the trio matching clothing and pairing off with their counterparts. Though it seems likely that the celebs will be suspects in the principal murder any way, it is yet unknown if they are playing fake actors or themselves.
This Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Casting Is Odd but Perfect
Longoria, Levy, and Galifianakis had earlier said they would be joining the Only Murders in the Building cast, but prior to this Instagram post it was not clear exactly who they would be playing. Given two of the actors playing the primary trio are significantly different from the characters themselves, with age variances of a decade and a half or more, it would have been challenging to forecast this turn of events.
Of the three, only Eugene Levy is somewhat near to the age the character he is portraying. But given the apparently inevitable Hollywood mockery of the show, the idea that a younger actor will be portraying Oliver makes sense. The business often casts younger performers wherever it can. Oliver's sense of vanity would also probably find attraction in a younger celebrity playing him. Eva Longoria is 18 years older than her role, though, which is pretty strange. The show will presumably note these age variations and perhaps even feature them as major story points. Given that the Only Murders in the Building season 3 ending revealed that the murder would be Hollywood-centric in some form, involving the killing of Charles' stunt double Sazz (Jane Lynch), bringing the strangeness of Hollywood Casting front and center makes sense. As the show enters its fourth season, the in-universe film and its characters provide a fascinating new twist even though it is yet unknown exactly how they will fit the current season.
