The much awaited follow-up to the 1996 movie Twister, "Twisters," has left viewers wondering about the lack of a romantic kiss between the heroes, Tyler (Glen Powell) and Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) at the end of the film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Lee Isaac Chung discussed the deliberate decision's reasoning and the changing opinions on romantic representations in Movies and TV.
Originally filmed, Chung finally chose not to use a kissing scene as the finale since he felt the version without the kiss more powerful and relevant. He observed a change in audience expectations about on-screen romance, implying a rising inclination for complex and less obviously romantic images.
Chung stressed that the finale was meant to honor Kate's accomplishments and her ongoing commitment to storm chasing. In his opinion, a kiss would have turned the narrative's romantic element front and center, so eclipsing Kate's personal path and professional development. "I thought the airport would be a great place where Daisy and Glen and [Anthony Ramos]' characters could all come together in some sort and we see that their relationships have changed," he said. In some sense, I considered Kate as a tornado. We have no idea her destination is or what her future holds. Tyler is a storm chaser, thus I reasoned that he should be chasing her as well.
The actress portraying Kate, Edgar-Jones, agreed with Chung's observation that the film is about Kate's rekindled love of storm chasing, not about Kate and Tyler's relationship. Playing Tyler, Powell presented a different viewpoint and said that their love language is shared passion for storm chasing rather than physical intimacy. He said, the absence of a kiss reflects a deeper connection grounded on common interests and goals.
The lack of a kiss gives the ending a layer of uncertainty that leaves viewers wondering about Kate and Tyler's future. Although their relationship seems reasonable, the unverified character of their bond generates interest and presents opportunities for next episodes.
Ramos, who portrays Javi in the film, has expressed interest in delving further into the journey of the characters even though a sequel has not been formally confirmed. The open-ended ending offers rich ground for a sequel, raising unresolved issues about Kate, Tyler, and Javi's professional paths and changing relationships. The lack of a kiss also leaves the romantic dynamic between Kate and Tyler open to interpretation, so adding still another layer of expectation for possible future events.
Twisters is a welcome change from the usual romantic clichés connected with films headed by women. Kate's career and her love of storm chasing give a different and inspiring viewpoint that emphasizes the need of both personal development and professional aspiration.
Twisters is more than just a follow-up; it's an homage to the original movie with subdued references to the cherished 1996 classic. This link is highlighted by Helen Hunt's returning performance as Jo and the movie's homage to the late Bill Paxton, a key character in the original.
