Amanda Waller had threatened Dreamer's parents to bring her in compliance.
Task Force X has acquired Dreamer following her latest escape effort in Nicole Maines, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas, and Becca Carey's Suicide Squad: Dream Team #4. Though she struggles to get free, Nia cannot remove the grip on her alone. Saying that both of them can be heroes and that she needs Bizarro to assist her, she begs. Dreamer steals her powers back from Black Alice when her pleadings work and Bizarro rips Nia out from her shackles.
Dreamer shows up in Waller's office and gets a file including her ultimate contingency. Waller has connected Amanda's heartbeat to two bombs implanted in Dreamer's sister and father. Should Waller flatlines for any cause, Amanda's family members will also die alongside each other. Dreamer finds Waller is speaking the truth while using her precognitive abilities to glimpse the future. To ensure Dreamer's family is secure, Nia agrees to keep working on the Suicide Squad and comply to Waller's whim.
Dreamer's Road from the Arrowverse to the DC Universe
Dreamer was a brand-new character developed for Supergirl on the CW. Presented on the program as an ancestor of the Legion of Super-Heroes member Dream Girl, Nia Nal is a Naltorian. Dreamer has precognitive ability which lets her observe astral projection and make energy constructions as well as flashes of the future. Originally confined to the Arrowverse, Dreamer eventually arrived in the canon DC Universe in DC Pride 2022 #1 in a short story penned by her on-screen actress Nicole Maines.
Dreamer had several team-ups with Superman Jon Kent after first showing in the DC Universe. But Amanda Waller saw what Dreamer could do during a team-up during the "Beast World" crisis and chose to make Nia an asset. Threatening to reveal Nia's home, the extraterrestrial community Parthas, to the world should she refuse, she went up to Dreamer with a goal of downing a rogue precog. Dreamer nodded and started the first of several tasks Waller had scheduled for Nia.
Dreamer is Powerful; but, powerless to stop Wallace Amanda
She has only been more potent ever since Dreamer first entered the DC Universe. Apart from her combat ability, Nia's powers have matured really significantly. She is a force to be reckoned with since her precognitive abilities are improving and her capacity to go through dreams makes difference. Even Waller has had to take more care than normal around Dreamer, cutting her sleeping time to one hour a night to keep Nia from gaining the upper hand. But Waller has at last got the hero exactly where she wants her by endangering Dreamer's family.
To be clear, Dreamer wants no business working with Amanda Waller. Not to mention Waller's flagrant disrespect for the underprivileged, Nia is horrified by both her hypocrisy and her abuses of authority. Dreamer, though, loves her family and cannot afford to risk having them slain. Since Nia began this crusade to curb the metahumans, she has come closer than anybody to taking her life. Dreamer just cannot fight back though, knowing that any opposition could have terrible effects on her loved ones.
Can Dreamer Figure Out a Fighting Back Strategy?
Dreamer is a hero who became victim of the most powerful manipulator in the DC Universe. Nia's inability to know the life of her father and sister puts her in jeopardy, not that she lacks will to fight back. Dreamer could cut this in a second if she or someone could maybe sever the link between Waller's heartbeat and the bombs in Nia's family. The Arrowverse hero cannot stop Waller's plan, though, as long as Waller has hovering over Dreamer's head.
Dream Team #4 is currently available from DC Comics under Suicide Squad.
