"We Would Love It But": Future Addressed by Creators Original Pretty Little Liar Cast Could Return in Spinoff
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School's writers have talked about the likelihood of additional original characters making comeback. The franchise carried on with the brief 2019 spinoff The Perfectionists following the end of the long-running teen mystery thriller Pretty Little Liars in 2017. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, a slasher-forward drama revived for a second season under a different subtitle, was relaunched once more in 2022 under Another season looks well within the reach of possibilities, whether it's Pretty Little Liars: Summer School season 2 or just a third season with a new subtitle.
Following the Summer School conclusion, Deadline recently met with creators of Pretty Little Liars, Original Sin, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon. As they talked about the show's future, they expressed opinions on other original characters showing up following Annabeth Gish's six Summer School episodes in which she repeated her Dr. Sullivan character. Calhoon Bring alluded that "we've definitely talked about making those visitations," while Aguierre-Sacasa indicated it could happen as long as it seemed "organic and right" for the tale. Please see their whole quotes below. Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa: In Season 1, I believe we deliberately chose to cite a few things like Rosewood and the Radley Asylum and such things. Still, our main concentration was on creating this version in Millwood town. Dr. Sullivan seemed to be somewhat subtly incorporated in Season 2. Should there be a Season 3, we are rather hopeful and thus it would simply have to seem completely natural and correct. Although we would adore it, the narrative and logical sense actually drive it. Lindsay Calhoon Bring: You are completely correct. We are, by the way, fans. Those of our writers are fans. Super fans in our cast are always wondering when we are writing in Lucy [Hale] and Troian [Bellisario]. Alison is likely to show up. We never considered in Season 2, "Oh, we have to connect to the original universe." We reasoned, "These girls need therapy." Oh Lord. One can find an organic link there. We enjoy the show, though. The earth is loved by us. Rosewood is dear to us, and should a Season 3 arise, we have very certainly discussed making those visitations.
In Season 3, what Pretty Little Liars Stars could make a comeback?
Lindsay Calhoon. Bring's mention of discovering an organic approach to include the returning therapist role emphasizes how any returning character would have to suit Season 3, should it be renewed. It is challenging to identify which original Pretty Little Liars cast members would be the greatest fit to return their roles as there is no indication on where the story could travel in a future season should that happen. Still working in the business, nevertheless, are all the stars portraying the longest-running principal characters for the show.
Of the three stars Calhoon Bring addressed especially, Lucy Hale looks most likely to resurface in the project. Since the end of Pretty Little Liars, Hale has starred in several well-known horror films, especially the Blumhouse visits Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. Therefore, the horror-infested new season could be interesting to the actor. While both are still busy, Troian Bellisario has taken on more straight dramas than genre titles while Sasha Pieterse, who portrayed Alison, hasn't returned to episodic television since 2019, when she starred in The Perfectionists. For The Perfectionists, Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish both replayed their original Pretty Little Liars roles. Almost any of the other main characters from Pretty Little Liars could also be present in the season after Summer School. This covers Shay Mitchell (Emily), Ashley Benson (Hanna), and Ian Harding (Ezra). Laura Leighton, who portrayed Hanna's mother Ashley Marin and is currently attached both as star and executive producer to a reboot of her 1990s primetime drama Melrose Place that is in development and so may keep her busy during the time season 3 would be running through. She is the only key long-running main cast member who may not be able to return.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin's Writers Suggest Possible Original Cast Returns
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin's creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, have alluded to the likelihood of returning original cast members for a possible third season. Although the Spinoff series has focused on a new generation of characters, the creators respect the original series and have shown openness to reintroducing known faces should it naturally fit the story.
Maintaining the integrity of the narrative is important, according to Aguirre-Sacasa; any returning original character would have to seem real and significantly advance the story. Calhoon Bring echoes this feeling, stressing the team's affection of the original series and its universe and implying that they have already talked about possible approaches to include original characters into next seasons. Fans' enthusiasm about the possible comeback of iconic characters like Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, and Sasha Pieterse has increased expectation for what might be in store for the Pretty Little Liars franchise going forward.
