San Diego brush fire Prompts evacuations on Halloween!
Fairmount Fire: A Halloween Blaze Near San Diego State
Halloween took a dramatic turn near San Diego State University (SDSU) on Thursday, October 31st, as a fast-spreading brush fire ignited southwest of the campus. The Fairmount Fire, described as "large and growing," quickly consumed at least 40 acres, prompting immediate evacuations. Thankfully, SDSU itself was unaffected by this rapid spread!
The fire, which was at 0% containment by 4 p.m. local time, caused authorities to close nearby roads. Evacuations were put into effect, lasting at least until midnight. Multiple agencies pitched in; fire crews battled the blaze, using air support dropping water and retardant – as seen through video and live updates from reporters and other individuals in the affected zones; this is quite impressive considering just how massive the scale was!
Smoke Advisory Issued; Hardy Elementary Evacuated
With the Fairmount fire raging, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District issued a smoke advisory across central and southeastern San Diego County. Even though winds weakened overnight, low-lying smoke still impacted areas around Lemon Grove, Encanto, and Bonita.
Authorities urged caution for local residents impacted. The advisory stressed that people with respiratory and heart problems, the elderly, and especially children remain inside to avoid smoke exposure as it might trigger very specific problems relating to health and respiration issues; and they recommend this specifically in their statements!
And things didn’t stop there. Several schools were affected, as Hardy Elementary students were safely evacuated to SDSU's Viejas Arena; that quick reaction was very significant as several agencies had to completely organize the logistics and effort, coordinating between emergency officials and education staff, arranging the appropriate shelter in order to maintain student’s safety.
Shooting Near SDSU Campus: Suspects Apprehended
Adding to the chaos on Thursday evening, authorities reported a shooting incident near the SDSU campus. Police were quick to react, yet things still unfolded somewhat ambiguously, leading to moments where campuses had to increase security while maintaining student’s well-being and safety. This created many difficult moments while multiple people tried to resolve that shooting.
The incident started around 4:38 p.m. with a report of a man shot on College Avenue near a trolley stop. One victim, not affiliated with SDSU, was transported to a hospital. By 5:30 p.m., authorities made two arrests, recovering a weapon, as many on campus were advised to shelter in place, maintaining constant vigilance against this event and trying to avoid unnecessary issues within that campus; showing SDSU’s great ability to deal with extremely difficult crises in such tense, uncertain and quickly changing conditions.
