New Show Lead by House of the Dragon Actor Climbs Global Chart for Netflix
Leading the new Netflix series Geek Girl, which is rising the streamer's global charts, Emily Carey debuted as young Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon season 1. As the younger versions of the title characters in recent Tomb Raider and Wonder Woman, Carey has had significant roles. Carey now takes the stage in the well-reviewed Geek Girl, playing the main role.
Geek Girl has begun to stir waves on the streamer's worldwide Top 10 ranking for English-language television shows since its May 30 Netflix premiere. Having 3.4 million views and 18.9 million hours watched, the show ranked seventh overall for the week of May 27 to June 2. While the later property's third season, Bridgerton, gained the top slot on the list, it outranked acknowledged hits as Baby Reindeer and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
What Should One Know Regarding Netflix's Geek Girl Series?
Carey stars as awkward high school student Harriet Manners in Geek Girl. Once a London modeling agent finds Harriet on a school trip, she leaps at the chance to redefine herself. She, however, moves from one fashion disaster to the next and quickly learns that self-acceptance is much beyond the runway. Based on Holly Smale's 2013 Young Adult novel, the show is the most recent addition to a mounting slate of Ya films and shows on Netflix.
Other hit YA books are My Life With the Walter Boys, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and The Kissing Booth. The program opens as House Of The Dragon gets ready to return, but without Carey since it won't flashback to a younger Alicent. The Geek Girl cast includes Carey together with Emmanuel Imani, Liam Woodrum, Daisy Jelley, Rochelle Harrington, Tim Downie, Jemima Rooper, and Zac Looker. Smale and Jessica Ruston, who also serves behind the camera, co-created the show. Declan O'Dwyer oversaw all 10 episodes, having also helmedially Merlin and Killing Eve. Whether the show will make a second run is yet unknown.
Early success for the show
Though there haven't been enough to produce a Rotten Tomatoes score, Geek Girl has gotten generally good reviews. While some detractors caution that the adaptation would appeal more to the target Young Adult audience, Carey's performance and the way the show tackles a neurodivergent narrative with care but without limiting the story to just one area have been praised. Though it is still early days, the light and fun fashion romp seems to have the audience to complement the praise.
