Doctor Who Fan Art Shows Vulnerable Side of 15th Doctor, Recalling Heartbreaking Season 14 Ending

Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Art Is a Heartbreaking Reminder of One of Season 14’s Most Emotional Endings

Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor has had a whirlwind of a first season as the Time Lord, and a new piece of Fan Art perfectly captures the Doctor’s charm and vulnerability, with subtle nods to one of the Time Lord’s most emotional adventures.

After making a surprise appearance in the final 60th-anniversary special of Doctor Who in 2023 and having a season-opening adventure, Gatwa led his eight-episode debut season alongside Millie Gibson’s new companion, Ruby Sunday. Despite an emotional farewell, Gatwa and Gibson will reunite for Doctor Who season 15, where the TARDIS team will become a trio when Varada Sethu’s new companion steps aboard.

Hansoeii on Instagram has created a new piece of art that captures the Doctor in a charming moment, standing before the TARDIS entrance, holding a bundle of flowers, in one of his most recognizable outfits. While the outfit doesn’t perfectly match the one he wore in “Rogue,” the Doctor’s vulnerable and charming demeanor brings to mind his whirlwind romance with the intergalactic bounty hunter Rogue (Jonathan Groff).

The Fifteenth Doctor Has a Subtle, Heartbreaking Arc

The Fifteenth Doctor has quickly established himself as one of the more vulnerable incarnations of the Time Lord. Gatwa’s debut season marks a new era, where the Doctor has found closure from many lifetimes of torment, pain, and trials, but his travels have not been without heartbreak.

Alongside his sad parting with Rogue, the Doctor has been questioning his impact on the universe. Ever since meeting Ruby on Christmas Eve, he has been wary of whether he makes people better, and if his presence is good for those he cares about.

In the Season 14 finale, the Doctor admits to Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) that part of him fears that he only brings pain, after the potential for a reunion with his granddaughter, Susan, arises. This fear becomes a reality when it’s revealed that Sutekh (Gabriel Woolfe) has clung to the TARDIS since his first encounter with the Time Lord, using his adventures to bring about a plan that almost wipes out the universe.

By the end of Doctor Who Season 14, not only is the Doctor alone, but he questions his place in the universe. The Fifteenth Doctor has established himself as one of the most vulnerable incarnations of the Time Lord, showcasing his pain and frustration more openly while also eager to show his affection. The latest artwork captures one of the Time Lord’s defining qualities.

While Gatwa’s previous Doctor Who adventures can be found on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer, a new seasonal special will be released in December of this year.
