Who Was Idris Elba's Character in Star Trek Beyond?
Idrisa Elba made an awesome appearance in Star Trek: Beyond. It was so wild because his villain wasn't who we thought it was.
Idris Elba was Krall!
Yeah, he was Krall in the third Star Trek movie from the Kelvin Timeline, that's all about Kirk, Spock, and those awesome Star Trek characters! It all kicked off in the Star Trek movie of 2009. He’s super-bad in the movie!
Wait...What's the deal with Krall's origin?
He wasn't an alien! Krall was actually a human named Balthazar Edison! Think of it as a crazy twist that really made things interesting - so this super villain who was all decked out in makeup was really just a human under the mask.
This guy had a pretty sad story, too! He had a MACO career, in Star Trek: Enterprise, and was super dedicated. Then he joined Star Trek! Sadly, the USS Franklin went down on Altamid - his whole life was turned upside down!
Where Does He Stand Amongst The Big Villains?
I have to say that Krall is actually a bit of a forgotten character. Compared to Star Trek’s super bad guys - like the Borg Queen, and those epic, baddies in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - he was pretty forgettable, since he was a one-time villain, and people were super surprised about this Krall's origin, they didn’t remember much else! If he was in more Movies, he might have made a bigger impact - just like those bad guys in the original series! You gotta remember - Krall wasn't from a super popular enemy species - like those Klingons! Those guys were always showing up! But hey, at least he’s an awesome Star Trek villain - those guys make those space adventures super epic!
Why Does Krall Rank So Low?
I think this had a lot to do with that prosthetic makeup. You really can't tell it's Elba underneath it all, because it's that thick! The villain part, well, it's not so memorable either. You just gotta imagine Idris Elba could do much more than this one movie!
Did He Really Do a Bad Job?
Maybe it’s a bit unfair, but the Krall character wasn't super effective either! You'd think they would show up more - or have more to do! They could have given him more time to shine, with an epic backstory - it just didn’t make that much sense. But those scenes, where the real Krall comes to life with that awesome Star Trek movie feel - it was definitely the coolest part, you just can’t beat those space fights! I guess we have to admit - Star Trek always throws a few crazy twists into the mix to make those space adventures more awesome!
