Taskmaster's Archery in Black Widow Gets Roasted by Archery Expert
Archery expert Jim Kent recently called out Taskmaster's archery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Black Widow. In a Business Insider video, Jim Kent, a traditional archer, critiqued the accuracy of archers in movies and TV shows. Taskmaster was highlighted in the video, firing exploding arrows during a city chase. It seems Black Widow didn't score highly when it came to archery realism.
Jim Kent gave the Black Widow scene a measly 4 out of 10. He explained that "bows don't do that... I can't think of a plausible way that would ever work," though at least he admitted the scene was cool. He pointed out the unrealistic bow technique, tension on the bowstrings, how it was held, and how hard it would be to use with Taskmaster's mask.
How Thunderbolts Can Redeem Taskmaster Being Wasted in Black Widow
Black Widow wasn't a fan favorite Marvel film, with some even calling it the worst female-led Marvel movie or show. While it wasn't a terrible movie, the underwhelming use of a threat like Taskmaster is representative of a larger issue. Taskmaster's abilities to replicate the fighting styles of almost anyone should have made her a tough enemy. Instead, she had a small role and never got to truly show off her skills.
Fortunately, Taskmaster is slated to return in Thunderbolts. This is a big chance for the MCU to redeem Taskmaster and other villains. The Avengers was successful in making new heroes feel important, and maybe Taskmaster will have a better showing in Thunderbolts. The movie needs great fight choreography to fully showcase Taskmaster's abilities and her full potential.
Realistic Fight Scenes: Could the MCU Learn From Black Widow's Mistakes?
Just because a scene isn't realistic doesn't mean it's bad. However, most of Taskmaster's Black Widow scenes didn't resonate with viewers. Maybe the lack of realism contributed to the disappointment. Maybe the MCU should strive for more realism, which could lead to more impactful fight scenes in future projects. Thunderbolts could be a chance for the MCU to learn from the criticism of Black Widow's Taskmaster.
If Thunderbolts has some awesome fight scenes and Taskmaster shines, maybe people will forget about Black Widow's disappointing Archery.
