Although Neopets is already a cultural phenomenon that has survived beyond the several generational changes of the internet, the next spinoff of the series wants to adapt a genre made popular by one of the coziest games on the market. Most players will probably be most familiar with the browser-version of Neopets, a basic yet appealing game that lets users adopt, customize, and hang around with cute fantasy animals. Although that edition is still somewhat popular, individuals seeking something a little more current that would also be playable on the go should most definitely check out Tales of Darcadia.
According to the trailer, Neopets: Tales of Darcadia seeks to replicate the island-management system that Animal Crossing: New Horizons proved so successful. The video shows athletes developing and personalizing the terrain with different decorations and buildings while also cleaning up a section of ground apparently damaged by time. Of course, without the titular critters as players can populate their island with the animals, giving them all the supplies they need to occupy themselves and play in the sun, it would not be a Neopets game.
Surface-wise, Darcadia and Animal Crossing have obvious parallels, particularly when one considers New Horizons. Though Nintendo most likely popularized the idea with its blockbuster 2020 game, the idea of cleaning up and reorganizing an island is not really patented. While those parallels are hard to overlook, there are some fundamental differences between the two games even if building the island by designing buildings and using Neopets instead of villagers sounds identical.
Most clearly is the fact that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a Nintendo Switch exclusive while Tales of Darcadia may be found on mobile platforms. Neopets' interpretation of the genre also flips the viewpoint by using an over-the-top camera that views the entire island instead of tracking around the protagonist. Players will also have far greater power over the people living on their island; Animal Crossing treats Villagers with a feeling of uniqueness and "free will," whereas Tales of Darcadia invites users to personalize their Neopets whatever they desire.
Fans of the animals may now play a free Animal Crossing-like game starring the creatures, therefore the ever-popular Neopets franchise is returning on enormous scale.
Not sure? Here is a refresher on the sensation known as Neopets—and to some, still is. Although that edition is still somewhat popular, individuals seeking something a little more current that would also be playable on the go could most certainly check out Tales of Darcadia.
Nintendo's life-sim has always been somewhat light on story, choosing to let players just enjoy the flexibility of creating their own environment, but Darcadia has a mystery at its core: The Town Planner is entrusted with determining what precisely happened to wreck their island in the first place. These days, iOS and Android devices carry the game for free.
