Movies News Talk
A new action Christmas movie called Red One has been in the news lately because of a crude remark about Wonder Woman. In the movie, Dwayne Johnson's character uses a gadget that, like Ant-Man's size-changing technology, transforms a toy car into a real car. Then, in an apparent jab at the superhero, Chris Evans's less-than-gentlemanly Captain America character storms into a toy store and asks if they have a Wonder Woman action figure. This gratuitous jab at Wonder Woman is not the first of its sort; in the 2017 Justice League film, Aquaman likewise made offensive remarks about Wonder Woman while perched on the Lasso of Truth.
Hollywood has a long tradition of using women as cheap gags and objects of desire in its films. Even while women are among the biggest stars in the business, they frequently play supporting roles that rely on crude innuendo. This is particularly true for strong female characters that embody grace, boldness, and strength, like Wonder Woman. These characters become less significant when they are reduced to objects of desire, and damaging and out-of-date prejudices are reinforced.
Wonder Woman's strength and might were emphasized by Gal Gadot's interpretation of the character in two independent films. These crossover films have continuously objectified her and minimized her part, even in spite of her fame. Red One carries on this pattern, sustaining a disdain for the ideals that Wonder Woman stands for. The filmmakers of the movie ought to have second-guessed their decision to turn such a strong and inspirational figure into a cheap joke.
Wonder Woman is a representation of justice and strength, and she should be treated with dignity. Being exploited for cheap laughs is far less significant than her iconic status and the ideals she stands for. Hollywood needs to stop making fun about old women and start treating them with the respect and decency they deserve. A new era of movies that honor strong women and their contributions to society is overdue.
Red One's embarrassing Wonder Woman joke will probably hurt the film's critical response. Both critics and audiences are growing more insensitive to crude comedy that is out of date and demeaning, particularly when it involves strong female characters and women. People who are sick of seeing women treated like objects will probably respond negatively to the movie because of its reliance on corny jokes and lack of sense of humor.
The movie's heavy dependence on antiquated humor raises serious concerns about how the critics will view it. The gags may be funny to some audiences, but the lack of intelligence and disrespect for Wonder Woman will turn off a lot of people. Red One is clearly out of touch with modern audiences and is going to take a beating for not moving past these outmoded clichés.
Red One's critical reaction is probably going to be, at most, mediocre. Critics and viewers alike will probably take issue with the film's outmoded gags and refusal to confront the problem of Hollywood Sexism. As it is simply not the kind of movie that is likely to resonate with those who value nuanced humor and respectful portrayals of women, it is unlikely that the movie will receive any big awards recognition.
Because Red One relies so heavily on offensive and antiquated gags, the movie will probably have a dismal and lonesome awards season. The film's shallowness and reinforcement of negative stereotypes will probably offset any positive parts, even though some people might find its action and humorous portions enjoyable. Instead of using the movie's makers' chance to honor Wonder Woman and her morals, they decided to devalue her persona in order to make a corny joke.
