Halfway through its sixth weekend in theaters, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes attracted a combined domestic Box Office total more than $146.88 million. This suggests that it has exceeded the domestic total for 2017 movie War for the Planet of the Apes. Though War is still the second highest-grossing movie in the series worldwide, Kingdom has topped the previous one to rank fourth on the Apes domestic list.
The franchise chart at the domestic box office shows Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes moving up. Though it's the eleventh film in the whole series, which debuted in 1968, Wes Ball oversaw the fourth installment in the reboot series, which started in 2011 Rise. Starting with a $58.4 million domestic opening weekend—the second-best performance of the reboot franchise following 2014's Dawn—Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes box office currently ranks fourth worldwide in 2024.
This is a challenging concept since the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes differs from the top movie on the Domestic chart by more than $60 million. Since it has already started having seven-digit weekends, declining returns imply that it would need to keep a very strong audience hold for at least seven more weeks if it is to approach Dawn. But soon it will surpass the 2001 Apes remake as the No. 4 movie of the franchise globally, so at least it can claim that title on both charts.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is no longer the lowest-grossing film in the franchise to open in the twenty-first century as it has achieved this Box Office mark. Still bottoming out the list of 21st-century episodes at No. 5 for the time being, it remains to be seen whether it rises any higher up the Domestic chart and if it can accomplish a similar feat on the worldwide ranking. See here how the performance of the movie stacks against the other Top 5 Planet of the Apes films on the domestic chart:
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes most certainly will wind up staying where it is on the domestic list. Major competition includes Pixar's Inside Out 2 and the blockbuster horror prequel A Quiet Place: Day One will arrive in theaters in the next weeks, therefore reducing the number of screens the Apes movie is running on. Though considering its better opening weekend, it could be out of its ability to achieve the roughly $29.8 million it would need to top Rise.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the next Apes book set several years following the events of War for the Planet of the Apes. Ape clans have settled in the oasis Caesar planned for colonization, but people have returned to their animalistic nature in absence. Now fighting between slavery and freedom, Ape clan outlays will side with a newly developing community.
