Kevin Costner's $100 million Western Is Projected for a Dreary Box Office Start
Kevin Costner's Western movie epic Horizon: An American Saga's first episode, valued at $100 million, seems to have a poor box office turnout. He became a Western superstar with his 1990 Oscar-winner Dances With Wolves, then starred in less-popular genre films Wyatt Earp and Open Range. Now more than thirty years after riding the Western form to box office and Oscar gold, Costner is back in the saddle with Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the first section of a scheduled four-film epic.
Though Costner's intentions for Horizon to cover four films may not be substantially affected, the opening part of the epic looks to be a disappointment as the $100-million Movie is estimated to gross just $12 million in its first weekend of release (via THR). Tracking has Western return ranking second behind the horror prequel A Quiet Place: Day One.
Regarding Horizon's prospective box office, what has Costner said?
Though it will take time, Costner believes Horizon: An American Saga will find a market. The truth is that movie opening weekends at the Box Office determine most people's impressions of them, and Horizon's first chapter looks to be a big disappointment. Costner is not new to flops; he sank his career as a bankable main actor thanks in part to the infamous bombs Waterworld and The Postman. Still not gunshy, though, Costner is putting his money where his mouth is by personally funding most of the Horizon story.
Costner mostly funded the project personally, revealing recently that he had poured $58 million of his own money into his Western cinematic tale (with much of the rest covered by overseas revenues). Warner Bros. is distributing Horizon in the US. Speaking to Empire, Costner discussed the danger involved in devoting so much of his personal money to the Movie, but he sounded bullish when talking about the film's chances of finding an audience over time.
Still not gun shy is Costner.
Your Honor failed to appeal to viewers and critics despite the show's reputation on-camera and off. Reviews were divided on both sides since the Rotten Tomatoes consensus ranges at 50–60%. The narrative and tempo got criticism even if the actors were praised. Still, Cranston's Breaking Bad follow-up might find a second life with a shift to Netflix.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 might underperform forecasts since WB does more advertising in the weeks before the movie opens, increasing awareness among Costner's followers. Costner is proceeding with his four-part epic even if the film fails; Chapter 2 is planned to premiere on August 16, 2024, and Chapter 3 is now under production (as Costner personally recently confirmed).
Horizon's Story
Along with Moffat, who also acts as showrunner and writer, Robert and Michelle King created the show. The Good Wife and its spin-off The Good Fight are especially well-known creations of The Kings. Moffat has meantime worked on a number of British court system dramas. Among others he names Criminal Justice, North Square, and Silk.

An Examination of Horizon's Universe
The audience of the legal dramas will find great entertainment value in them. Although the show's future events are yet unknown, one may see how the objectives of the showrunner could come out.
