Marvel's most recent cosmic adventure, G.o.d.s., ends on a massive Cliffhanger that might completely rewrite not only the series but also the entire Marvelous history as known to us. What would the world look like if one of its main heroes passed away? Does it even make it? Though right now in flux, the decision at the core of this subject is still one that will have enormous effects regardless of the result.
Main character Wyn in G.o.d.s. #8 by Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti is given the chance to have his past altered. Although readers are not shown his decision, it is heavily suggested that Wyn approves, therefore changing the Marvel Universe. Representing all magic in the Marvel Universe, Wyn is the avatar of The-Powers-That-Be. Wyn time returns to his own wedding and his patron shows up to give him a decision to turn around his past. Wyn's position sets him apart from his wife Aiko, who works for The-Natural-Order- Of Things opposing, The-Powers-That-Be. If he accepts The-Powers-That-Be's offer, he can live out his potential existence with Aiko; but, everything readers have seen in this novel won't have happened.
Readers know the Marvel Universe as it exists could suffer greatly from Wyn's decision. If G.O.D.S. select his personal satisfaction, then are those heroic deeds reversed? Wyn has proven multiple times protecting the earth. Alternatively does The-Powers-That-Be discover another avatar, someone else whose life will be irrevocably disrupted? Wyn realized just how much average people pay for service to the gods, which motivated him to travel back in time. He will thus most definitely choose to alter circumstances and grant himself the life he was deprived of.
But the problem also strongly suggests that Wyn might not decide to alter circumstances. He meets an ever farther future version of himself on his time-traveling trip, who says he lacked the courage to do anything when the time came. Will this future likewise be deleted with the change of the past, or does this future version of Wyn lock the choice of the present? Even the "main" Wyn is, with G.O.D.S. #8, from 100 years in the future, and if Marvel fans know anything about conceivable futures, they are always changing.
Crucially, Wyn's choice may also be part of a more general strategy. G.O.D.S. #6 ends that Wyn is done working for anyone, but in issue #8 his patron states he has been faithful over the one hundred years between issues. Is his devoted dedication to his benefactor only pretended? Readers are aware he went back in time to attend his wedding in order to alter events, but he also suggests his patron did not show up expectedly. If he is lying, what is his scheme? Wyn is a trickster, hence he most likely have something planned.
This depends on a continuation of the series. The last problem is G.O.D.S. #8; although there have been other indications the series isn't done just yet. The letters page for issue #8 straight-up states that readers will see these individuals again, which is probably why the series is so bold in leaving unresolved problems. The Marvel Universe teeters as Wyn must decide between the dutiful life to which he has always been bound until now and a life with the woman he loves.
