Which film— Garfield or Furiosa—is doing better?
The Garfield Movie is surpassing the Furiosa release, but it's still to be seen if either movie will eventually be regarded as a hit by the end of its runs. Their production costs and total worldwide figures will eventually determine this. Though that figure ignores marketing expenses, normally a movie's break-even point is at least twice its production budget since theaters keep half of ticket revenues. Using the Saturday forecasts, observe below how closely the total domestic totals of both films have come to meet that milestone thus far:
Title; Budget; Est. Break-Even Point; Cumulative Domestic B.O.
-------- | -------- | -------- | --------
Furiosa: $168 million, $336 million, $49.1 million, a Mad Max Saga.
The Garfield Movie: $50.8 million | $120 million | $60 million
While Mad Max Prequel Survives Dip, Garfield & Furiosa's Week 2 Box Office Race Is Tight.
As their neck-and-neck Box Office contest continues, the Garfield Movie is leading ahead of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Memorial Day marked the beginning of the former's domestic opening and the latter's global one, which resulted in a three-day weekend neck-and-neck competition for Box Office supremacy. Traversed by Garfield at $31.3 million, the Furiosa box office eventually grabbed No. 1 with a 4-day total of $32.3 million; it was too close to call until Monday, an exceptionally tight battle for a modern domestic box office weekend.
As of Saturday The Garfield Movie, Deadline projects it closing out its second weekend in domestic theaters with a 3-day total of $13 million. Both titles are still performing similarly, but it has pulled ahead of Furiosa, which is expected to rank No. 2 with $11.5million. For Furiosa, which is quite decent for a huge blockbuster in week two, this is a 56% decline; Garfield's much thinner 45% drop is what has resulted in this difference between the titles.
Examining the Weekend Numbers More closely
The Garfield movie has been playing worldwide since the beginning of May, collecting an international gross of $66.6 million before its second domestic weekend, although the data for international markets won't show up until later in the weekend. Opening worldwide during Memorial Day weekend, Furiosa has thus far only brought in $32.8 million globally. Given that Garfield's approaching international weekend only needs to bridge a gap of $2.6 million, neither title has made its break even point yet, although it looks more or less guaranteed that it will pass $120 million worldwide.
Given their ongoing domestic performance during the summer, the fact that both films had such mediocre second week returns in a weekend devoid of significant competitive new wide releases is not very encouraging. The Garfield Movie will most certainly fly toward becoming a strong hit in short time, though, if it keeps a constant week-over-week hold. Given its huge budget, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has a far longer trip ahead.
Furiosa's Story
Furiosa, an action-adventure movie set in prelude to Mad Max: Fury Road, chronicles the origin tale of the headstrong and daring adventurer. Set soon after the "end of the world," Furiosa is abducted and presented before a strong warlord now under orders to labor for him. Furiosa will adjust to the new hostile and dry environment she develops into and find her way back home.
Critics have given the movie great marks for its action scenes, actors, and narrative. The movie provides evidence of George Miller's vision and his talent in building unforgettable characters. It will be a big contribution to the Mad Max canon and most likely will appeal to viewers.
Garfield: Original Approach
Inspired by Jim Davis's comic strip, Garfield is a fresh vision of the lasagna-loving cat and his buddies using a totally computer-animated technique. With the movie focusing on Chris Pratt's early years and fresh mishaps for his family, friends, and him, Pratt voices the title cat.
Critics have given the movie conflicting opinions; some liked the animation and humor but attacked the storyline. Nonetheless, viewers have loved the movie because of its fun-for- all-ages appeal and humorous approach. Families and younger viewers who will be keen to watch more of Garfield's antics will find this to be a surefire delight.
