Venom: Let There Be Carnage - Why Knull's Role Was Surprisingly Small!
Whoa, hold up! Knull, that seriously terrifying cosmic entity, was the main villain in the marketing for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. We saw that awesome Knull throne shot – creating a lot of anticipation for fans; this huge threat was expected to shake up the entire Sony Spider-Man Universe. Yet this massively hyped villain had only a small part. What gives? This article explores the reasons.
The recent theatrical release ends that Venom trilogy and director Kelly Marcel confirmed (at this year's New York Comic-Con) this would only be a taste of Knull's awesome cosmic powers, setting up far larger plans: “This is just the introduction to Knull. Obviously, he's a massive character, so you could never do one and done with him, so this is just a taste of Knull, you will get to meet him and then what the future holds for him; who knows.” So, the minimal appearance wasn’t some oversight—it was a calculated choice to properly introduce him; laying the groundwork for some potentially epic future battles; suggesting another major series within the Sony universe involving this particular villain.
Remember how Thanos first showed up? A brief post-credits cameo in The Avengers (2012)! That small moment did a lot. The use of this limited amount of appearances, creates anticipation and greatly heightens those very dramatic narrative effects! That became even more prominent and crucial regarding its lasting influence upon audience members. This minimal reveal approach with Knull’s initial appearance, uses a similar technique seen in the MCU; establishing him only after significant events. The choice to have him briefly seen at this time mirrors the earlier reveal seen within the MCU for the very first appearance of Thanos and highlights how a seemingly minimal appearance created far-reaching anticipation for this cosmic deity that had been promised for much longer!
We do see Knull in the film itself! However, that appearance, although significantly longer, did involve far less activity than what was expected from prior trailers! It makes a compelling villain debut—it keeps Knull a seriously looming, overwhelming background presence! While other more “minor” entities become the main focus; and this makes Knull far more threatening; and greatly elevates anticipation regarding his future reappearance; that kind of carefully planned release will further show the depth and thought that went into introducing this significant player. This technique was seen similarly with Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) where Thanos pulled the strings, his actions completely hidden. This generates an even larger level of expectation surrounding him in upcoming sequels! It created suspense and added intrigue; generating those levels of anticipated excitement from audiences eager for the next revelation!
It’s been confirmed. Knull survives Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and his presence in the mid-credits sequence guarantees future encounters. But his specific next appearance isn’t easy to predict! He is, in the comics, heavily associated with Venom; meaning a spin-off featuring both these antagonists would make considerable sense! Yet he’s connected with characters handled by Marvel Studios like Thor, the Silver Surfer, and the Avengers— creating a massive complication for future productions.
It seems possible; even likely that we might just see him again during those Sony movies, considering he does already fit into their storylines more smoothly than Marvel Studios’ output. This approach involving multiple universes will create multiple crossovers, but with only Kraven the Hunter confirmed and without other upcoming Sony releases– we should perhaps wait a while until other titles emerge before making an absolute guess on a specific crossover film featuring him! And these cross-overs don't exclude the possibility of appearing in other productions, such as the next Spider-Man movie, given a piece of Venom's symbiote did travel to that reality within the MCU!
That limited Knull role is deliberate and smart. It follows techniques shown by the MCU; setting him up for future sequels rather than presenting this major reveal all at once. The careful plan introduces anticipation! His brief appearance creates a sense of overwhelming dread, laying that groundwork to potentially be the biggest antagonist of all. His next appearances aren’t clear; that’s entirely the point. Those cryptic clues only fuel fan excitement for what could be revealed later – whether during Sony's Spider-Man Universe or even an eventual MCU crossover!
