Netflix Sets Up Trigger Warning 2 As A Die Hard-Style Christmas Action Movie
Trigger Warning throws in a last-minute tease that Jessica Alba may be back for a sequel, and the followup could follow a similar framework as Die Hard. Alba's movie follows a Special Forces officer returning home to bury her father, but discovers her hometown has become incredibly corrupt in her absence. Alba leads the Trigger Warning cast as Parker, who proves time and again to be an incredibly capable fighter. While the ending of Trigger Warning neatly concludes the story, it also leaves the door open for another installment.
Bruce Willis is one of the biggest names in the action movie genre, but there's one movie franchise in particular that stands out when he's mentioned. Trigger Warning would do well to replicate even a fraction of the success of Willis' most iconic film series. While Alba's new movie shares a few similarities with the Willis-led franchise in question, a second movie could solidify the comparison even further.
Will Trigger Warning 2 Actually Happen At Netflix?
Mike calls Parker near the end of the movie, and while the conversation seems to be about decorating Maria's, Mike shifts the topic to one that could form the basis of a Trigger Warning sequel. Mike tells Parker, "I'm thinking of throwing a grand opening during the holidays." When asked if she'll be able to make it to the reopening of her late father's rebuilt bar, Parker replies, "Yeah, I'll try." It's only a brief exchange that could easily be interpreted as small talk. On the other hand, a Christmas action movie sounds oddly reminiscent of 1988's Die Hard.
There is a long-running debate about whether Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie, and Trigger Warning 2 could find itself caught up in the same situation. That is, if Netflix commissions a sequel to Jessica Alba's new action movie. If it does happen, it'll also align with 1990's Die Hard 2, which was also set around the holidays. However, Die Hard is held in incredibly high regard as one of the greatest action movies of all time. So, it would take a lot for Trigger Warning 2 to live up to the inevitable hype.
Trigger Warning's Streaming Success Is At Odds With Its Reviews
While it may seem as though Netflix have at least a soft plan to make another Trigger Warning movie, it remains to be seen whether it'll be deemed enough of a success to warrant a sequel being made. Confusingly, it quickly ranked highly on Netflix after it was released on the platform, and yet there hasn't been much praise for the production. It's possible that viewers were drawn in by the presence of a big name like Jessica Alba, but were ultimately disappointed by what they found. So, Trigger Warning 2 isn't looking very likely.
On the other hand, Trigger Warning went straight to Netflix and never received a theatrical release. So, there's no financial success to really worry about. Streaming models function differently to traditional studio productions. Plenty of people watched Trigger Warning, as proven by how quickly it shot up the charts on the platform. So, that may be the only metric required for Netflix to greenlight another installment. Trigger Warning got people engaging with Netflix in a big way, and that's not something to ignore.
