2015's Fantastic Four Linked "It's Clobbering Time" To Ben Grimm's Traumatic Upgrading
Ben Grimm's gruff and scrapping attitude in Marvel Comics stems from his childhood in a New York underprivileged area. Later died in a gang conflict, his older brother Daniel was admired. Though it set a young Ben in a dysfunctional home, the 2015 movie changed his bond with his sibling. Ben was being mistreated by his brother, who would say "It's clobbering time" before to smashing him. Ben says these words later before attacking Doctor Doom, even though they remind him of his horrific background.
In the comics, "it's clobbering time" is merely a phrase The Thing enjoys saying; it has no source. Linking it to Ben's horrific past makes the sentence awkward since it reminds the viewers of Ben's torture nonstop. The filmmakers might have wanted to give the phrase emotional depth to match the edgier Fantastic Four adaptation, but that's not the phrase's intention since it's a simple but effective Catchphrase that gives Ben something awesome to say before going into battle - meaning the tragic movie backstory to it feels at odds with its past usage.
The MCU can apply the catchphrase of the Thing in a similar manner as that of The Hulk.
Even in a superhero film, the ridiculous statement "it's clobbering time" is difficult to treat seriously. Hearing The Thing say it is interesting as he is well-known for it, but for best impact it must be done right. The MCU has a track record of making catchphrases for characters work; it can do the same for The Thing. The way the MCU used the term "Hulk Smash!" is the best illustration of this.
Like The Thing's remark, it's basically ridiculous, but the franchise made it work with timing. When Edward Norton's Hulk appears in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, it is used in a pivotal scene as Hulk destroys the earth to subdue Abomination. Later, it comes full circle when Captain America orders Hulk to smash during The Avengers' fight of New York. The Thing's statement must be established in an epic moment in the Fantastic Four film set for 2025, therefore it becomes a part of his character and can be used for a future callback.
The Fantastic Four Haven't Had The Cinematic Treatment They Deserve
Marvel's First Family had many errors in the Fantastic Four films, but the MCU corrected a strange choice from the 2015 Reboot that nearly destroyed a character's popular Catchphrase. Comic book readers have been waiting for a movie that at last gets the squad right since 2005's Fantastic Four. Although Tim Story's 2005 movie and its follow-up were not bad, they were too ridiculous and did not treat its characters—especially its villains—with the dignity they so merit. Fox's 2015 relaunch promised a more somber interpretation of The Fantastic Four, therefore offering some viewers hope.
Regarded differently by critics and failing at the box office, the 2015 picture unfortunately experienced much more controversy than the earlier live-action Fantastic Four films. One of its faults is that it made several dubious choices on the primary team and Doctor Doom. Though some were insignificant, they changed the way the viewers perceived the characters. Though the MCU chronology may be able to correct this, one of these little tweaks concerned the catchphrase of The Thing, giving it a terrible backstory that made viewers never want to hear him say it again.
