Wow, what a finish! 21-year-old Rio Takeda just snagged her first LPGA title in a nail-biting six-hole playoff at the Japan Classic! She battled it out against American Marina Alex, and it was a rollercoaster of birdies and pars. Talk about a dramatic ending!
The tournament was shortened to 54 holes because of bad weather on Saturday, setting the stage for an even more intense Sunday finish. This playoff win was also a huge career boost for Takeda, securing her a coveted LPGA tour card. No more Q School stress for her! She's ready to take on the LPGA tour next year.
Takeda started the final round tied with Alex, but needed some clutch play and magic. She landed that crucial birdie right “in final 18 hole”. forcing extra innings too!
After tying right at beginning, things remained neck in neck even through their "extra playoff hole," which also birdied. Four further holes still remained with everyone getting par still. In this its no surprise they had already become tired, both physically too in just keeping their gameplay focus also at such premium golfing ability in a marathon battle where most would find their “peak levels very early” too rather than maintaining consistency, that rather these became extremely talented too, both. No surprise either landed one 15 under-score through “standard holes even.
Both players birdied the first playoff hole, then parred the next four—can you believe it?!. Even through a golfing marathon, no less.
Finally, back at the par-five 18th. After reaching hole six on par 18. Rio then pulled ahead with some brilliant plays!. That became where this finally concluded!. There Alex remained just short, ultimately just grabbing “par” alone while she instead got “birdie!.”. Finally enough towards winning overall as it landed finally Rio also landing finally first title alongside that “first LPGA Card too.. That entire long tournament also. An especially incredible experience that she will fondly share now also.
This is one of those moments too we saw recently even, of similar marathon lengths! within LPGA Playoff histories!
