Deadpool & Wolverine Might Prove That Recasting Wolverine Is Impossible
Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for almost 25 years, and his return in Deadpool & Wolverine cements his ownership of the role. Jackman started acting later in life after being a physical education teacher in Australia. But his theatre and musical performances proved his big-screen potential. He landed the Wolverine role in the 2000s X-Men movie, years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) existed.
For almost 25 years, Jackman has played Wolverine, returning every couple of years. Each time, he brings a character that increasingly feels inseparable from the actor. But with his age and the Mcu introducing its own X-Men, Marvel Studios must overcome recasting Wolverine, who's intrinsically linked to Jackman. Deadpool & Wolverine may actually make recasting harder.
Ryan Reynolds Admits Recasting Wolverine Will Be Difficult
For years, MCU fans have craved Deadpool's entry into the MCU proper. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return, despite his 2017 retirement from the role, is a big bonus. Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool star, are good friends, and their chemistry in the upcoming film is exciting. But Reynolds has also said that Jackman is the only person who can play Wolverine.
While Reynolds' support for his co-star is great, it underscores Marvel's recasting challenge. Despite popular fan castings, franchise reboots, and time to replace the actor, Jackman remains the only Wolverine on-screen. Hopefully, Reynolds' comments are playful rather than serious, and Deadpool & Wolverine could be the first film to show character variants, slowly easing audiences into seeing new actors take the role.
The MCU Needs To Recast Wolverine
Some actors are perfectly suited to their roles. Jackman has made Wolverine his own, but it's time to pass the torch to someone new to carry the pivotal character into the Mcu's future. Deadpool & Wolverine is the perfect opportunity to explore new actors as Wolverine, potentially fulfilling fan castings, like John Krasinski's cameo as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Hugh Jackman will always be loved for bringing Wolverine to the big screen, but the role needs to change hands. Jackman is in shape, but keeping up with Wolverine's physicality and intensity won't be realistic for many more years. Plus, new characters will appear as the rest of the MCU's X-Men. Having an older Wolverine wouldn't fit the tone and would hinder the X-Men's future stories beyond Deadpool & Wolverine in the MCU.
