Star Trek: Section 31 Movie Shows TNG Fans Ignorance Regarding Rachel Garrett At All
One beloved legacy Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) character is Rachel Garrett. Fans only know her, though, from one perspective. Star Trek: Section 31 reveals a another side of her existence.
Teaser Trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 Shows Rachel Garrett a Different Side.
The teaser trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 shows Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl) from a somewhat different angle than the one fans would have come across on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Rachel Garrett holds a unique role in Star Trek history as the Captain of the USS Enterprise-C prior to Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Still, not much has been revealed about Garrett personally or her life before TNG's fleeting look at Captain Garrett's Enterprise. Originally appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 15, "Yesterday's Enterprise," Captain Rachel Garrett (Tricia O'Neil) met Captain Picard after her Enterprise-C unintentionally passed into a wormhole into the future.
Section 31: A New Kind of Trek Movie Star Trek
Star Trek: Section 31 already seems different from any other Trek project as seen in its first teaser trailer unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con. Michelle Yeoh's Emperor Philippa Georgiou has evolved from her first appearance in Star Trek: Discovery season 1 to become among modern Trek's most intriguing and powerful characters. Yeoh has always seemed to have diabolic fun depicting the Emperor, and Section 31 will probably follow that. Full of combat scenes and explosives, the teaser hints to a real action movie maybe with a heist or black operations mission. Rachel Garrett, played by Kacey Rohl, suggests she is also participating in Section 31's undercover operations by flitting through a range of vibrant hair styles.
Star Trek: TNG's Rachel Garrett in Section 31 Movie Is Totally Different
Rachel Garrett appears somewhat different from the serious Captain featured in Star Trek: The Next Generation, even though the Star Trek: Section 31 teaser trailer just shows snippets of her. However, given "Yesterday's Enterprise" saw Garrett on what was probably one of the hardest and most trying days of her life, this isn't really shocking. Clearly less experienced and considerably younger, Kacey Rohl's Garrett is still dedicated to Starfleet. By the time "Yesterday's Enterprise" rolls around, Garrett is ready to give her life, her ship, and even her crew up for sacrifice so the Federation could reach peace with the Klingon Empire.
" Section 31 is a black ops division, spy work," Garrett explains in one of her sole comments in the teaser for Star Trek: Section 31. Here to ensure nobody commits murder is Starfleet." Georgiou merely mocks this comment, saying, "What a cute idea," in a sarcastic voice. Later on, Garrett describes Georgiou as a "bad b" in a favorable sense, which doesn't seem like anything the Rachel Garrett of "Yesterday's Enterprise" would say. Still, viewers have seen so little of Rachel Garrett that it's hard to judge what is or isn't in character; it will be interesting to see Rohl's take of the part.
From Section 31, how does Rachel Garrett go to Captain of USS Enterprise-C?
The way Rachel Garrett appears in Star Trek: Section 31 begs the issue of how she moves from serving with Starfleet's black ops division to commanding the Federation's flagship. Of course, Section 31 stars Philippa Georgiou, and the teaser shows the movie will explore her past and introduce young Georgiou as Miku Martineau. Rachel Garrett's role in Section 31 is unknown yet, hence the movie probably won't have time to delve too further into her narrative. This opens the path for next Star Trek productions to chronicle Garrett's path to the Enterprise captain's chair.
