Life Itself (2014)
A documentary about one of the most influential voices in film criticism is leaving Prime Video on July 2. Life Itself is an exploration of the life and work of Roger Ebert. It details his long career as a writer, touching on his screenwriting days, before focusing on criticism and becoming one of America’s most renowned and trusted names in that world. The movie also details his battle with cancer which left him unable to talk for the final years of his life, leading up to his death in 2013, but never stopped him from working.
The movie uses clips from various interviews with Ebert as well as from his famous show Siskel & Ebert at the Movies alongside fellow critic Gene Siskel. There are also interviews with people ranging from fellow film critics to legendary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese to Ebert’s wife Chaz Ebert.
Black Christmas (2006)
A remake of a horror classic leaves Prime Video on July 3. The original Black Christmas was released in 1974 and was seen by some as the first true slasher horror movie. The 2006 remake is not nearly as ground-breaking but offers plenty of bloody slasher mayhem for fans of the genre. The film follows a group of sorority sisters who become targeted over the Christmas holiday by a killer who used to live in their sorority house.
This iteration stars the likes of Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the would-be victims and features some incredibly graphic gore along with some other disturbing subject matter. While never reaching the heights of the original, horror fans may want to check it out while they still can.
Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
Another holiday-themed horror movie is leaving Prime Video on July 4. Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers is a notable entry in the iconic Halloween movie franchise for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the final appearance of Donald Pleasence as Dr. Loomis. Unfortunately, it is also regarded by many as the worst of the franchise and led to a wiping of the canon once Halloween H20 came around.
The movie introduces the controversial storyline of a cult dedicated to Michael Myers as a figure of evil. It is an idea that many felt ruined the character with unnecessary supernatural elements. However, the film does have the bonus factor of being Paul Rudd’s feature debut as franchise veteran character Tommy Doyle. While some Halloween fans may be happy to see the movie go, others may want to revisit the controversial Halloween movie while they can.
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
A classic comedy starring Warren Beatty will be removed from Prime Video on July 4. Heaven Can Wait stars Beatty as a star football quarterback who is mistakenly taken to heaven sooner than he was supposed to by an overly anxious angel. Unable to return him to his old body, he is given the chance to instead go into the body of the recently murdered millionaire.
It is a terrific mix of fantasy and comedy with Beatty as a charming and funny lead. He is also joined by some strong supporting players, such as comedy greats Charles Gordin and Buck Henry. The movie finds a lot of clever aspects in this body swap movie such as Beatty having to contend with the rich man’s wife and business associate who expected him to be dead. In the end, it is a brilliant premise executed wonderfully.
Our Friend (2021)
A star-studded comedy-drama will be leaving Prime Video on July 8. Our Friend stars Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson as a couple who get devastating news that throws their life into chaos. Jason Segel plays their best friend who becomes an invaluable lifeline when he puts his own life on hold to help out the couple in every way he can.
The movie is based on the true story that writer Matthew Teague detailed in his Esquire article "The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word," adding another emotional element to the story. Though the movie was not a success at the box office, it got strong reviews from critics for the unique and intimate story as well as the cast, with Segel’s performance earning especially high praise. It makes for a small but worthwhile movie to check out.
